Happen To Your Career - Meaningful Work, Career Change, & Career Design (Careers)

“I am a former educator. So I have a background in early childhood education. And my views changed slightly after I had children and started raising them and started looking at careers and world life experiences differently.”

Even though most of us aren’t former educators, I’m sure most of us parents have a similar experience when we have children and begin raising them.

The above quote came from my wife, Alyssa. She joins me on the podcast this week as we talk about how to prepare children for their future careers.

Since we have a company that focuses on helping people with their careers, we have all the answers and are preparing our kids perfectly.

Maybe that’s a little of an exaggeration.

We don't do it perfectly. But we do have a pretty significant head start because, every single day, we get to see people many, many years later and what's worked out for them, and what hasn't worked out for them.

There are a lot of resources that help people prepare their kids for college, but that’s a limited approach.

We need to prepare our kids to be ready after college.

Listen to the podcast today to help you work with your kids and prepare them for their future careers.

We have done well over 300 episodes over the past 7 years. I have had a shared a lot of fantastic conversations right here on the podcast to help you create your own career happiness. One problem with having over 300 episodes, is that some episodes tend to get buried.

Today, I’d like to dig up one of those great conversations I had 7 years ago - it was actually the 3rd episode we ever released. When we originally talked she has written 1 book, but now she has written 3 more books. Her latest book is called, “The Serving Mindset: Stop Selling and Grow Your Business.” She is passionate about showing people how to define your their freedom in first their health and then their career, and she has doing this through her site ProlificLiving.com.

So here’s my conversation with Farnoosh Brock.

Robert was in a VP level role, earning great money and enjoying life and work. He was well known around his industry. He was great at what he did.

Things were pretty good overall… Until they weren’t!

Robert got laid off. No big deal right. A great opportunity to take some time and get a way. (Thanks soft landings and severance!)

Except when it came time to go back to work: 8 months passed. Then 10, 12… 18 months passed and he’d had a few interviews but nothing had panned out.

He and his partner were pulling their hair out a bit trying to figure out what was going on. He’s a smart guy, he gets results, why wasn’t this working?

They had been through everything, was it his interview style? Simply unlucky? Was he coming off as desperate?

That’s where I had the opportunity to meet Robert. As he was trying to figure out what was working and what wasn’t.

It turns out Robert’s answer wasn’t what you’d think it would be.

The cost for staying in your job is higher than you think, and Audrey learned that the hard way.

She was a talented Operations Manager working in the Events and Hospitality industry in New York City. She’d given much of herself to the job and had been rewarded with increasing responsibility, perpetual “thank yous” …and an increasing distaste for her work because what she valued most didn’t align with what the company valued.

When she came to us for help, it became apparent that the genuine, highly caring, no-holds-barred person that she was (and wanted to be more often) was being hampered because of the job she was working in.

This inability to be herself for 70 hours a week became so frustrating for her that it sparked an 11-month long journey to figure out what she really wanted and fight off the mental barriers that were keeping her stuck!

So how did she go from teary days staying at a job she hated to getting paid $20,000 more with a career that allowed her to be who she is?

Take a listen to Audrey’s story and find out!

Many people that think their dream is impossible.

Sharissa Sebastian had been in the tech industry for years, but was wanting to make a transition out of that field.

She was eventually introduced to coaching through Groupon.

Her coach began talking with her about what her ideal situation would look like, but she was holding herself back. She didn't think that "ideal" wouldn't be realistic.

But Sharissa's coach asked her, "But what if it is possible?"

“I felt like there was something missing in my career that I had some skills I wanted to sharpen that I wanted a different connection to the work that I was doing. And I was feeling very stuck in my search.” - Rebecca

“It literally made me sick, the anxiety, the stress that I was under.”- Jerrad

At Happen To Your Career, we hear this kind of thing all the time. High Performers work hard to get an education and build their careers. But then they find themselves in a place of unhappiness.

I want to share several examples of people that we have worked with that came from being stuck and unclear.

I’m sharing snippets of success stories today to show you that it really is possible to radically change your life. The “normal” ways that people approach career change don’t really work. At least, they don’t work reliably. So I wouldn’t recommend gambling on your life and your future.

At Happen To Your Career, we have helped hundreds of people 1-on-1 make career changes. Some of that help has been through our Career Change Bootcamp program, but we have also helped a lot of people at an even higher level through our Signature Coaching.

Check out the Signature Coaching Program now and see if it's a fit for you!

You can also be one of the first to schedule a call with us to talk about this with you 1-on-1!

Here at Happen To Your Career we often create episodes based on questions we get from our audience. However there’s one question I never ever get.

How can I remove distraction?

Distraction from achieving what’s most important to me?

Distraction that takes me away from who I want to be spending my time with?

And yet that’s what stops so many of us from what we really want to accomplish.

Who better to answer this question than the person who wrote "Indistractable: How to control your attention and choose your life." I read it and loved it so much that I bought it for my entire team for Christmas.

Here to teach us the difference between traction and distraction is author Nir Eyal.

This is actually a crossover episode from our other podcast, How to Become a Career Coach.

****

"How do you determine what to charge for coaching?"

"Should I do one-on-one coaching or group coaching?"

"What if my target market can't afford my rates? Do I go broke, or do I just lose out on clients?" (and they don't get the help they need)

These are common questions that new coaches often ask. In fact, these are questions that all coaches face when they hit a plateau or brick wall in finding new clients.

While it's important to address these issues, realize that there is not just a single answer.

You will probably be looking for an 'AND' solution.

Listen to hear how Jennifer found a way to help her target market (also create additional benefits for clients), make it affordable for their financial situation, AND also provided the income she needed for herself.

Many times people realize that they are not where they should be, doing what they should be doing, but they’re afraid to make a change. They’re afraid of what negative consequences may happen if they make a change. Maybe they make up excuses like:

  • “I can’t quit my job now, I’ve already put in 10 years.”
  • “I only have 5 years until I get to retire.”
  • “I have to make sure to take care of my family, so it’s not the right time.”
  • “What if my boss finds out I’m looking for another job - I’d get fired!”

And I totally get these. It can be scary when you face the unknown.

But, on the other hand, what if the change was actually going to improve your situation - not make it worse? As I’ve worked with thousands of people making career changes, getting over this hurdle is one of the best things that has happened in their lives. They’ve been able to find the work that really fits them. In many cases, they’ve been able to negotiate better salaries and benefits. They’ve been able to spend more quality time with their families.

Our guest today was actually a podcast listener for a long time, and then we had the opportunity to work with her on her recent career change. Moving from Eastern Europe to the UK, Karolina began working as an accountant. Everything was great...for six years.

Whoever said that hard work and perseverance doesn’t pay off sure didn’t meet Tanya.

What Tanya Malcolm Revell did when she was looking to make her big career change was no easy feat.

Besides being an American looking for work that fit her in London, Tanya is also a Career Change Bootcamp alum and our guest for this installment of our most recent CCB success story.

After experiencing the overwhelm of career burnout from her previous positions and frustration with the job search overseas, Tanya found HTYC, enrolled in Bootcamp, put in the hard work, built strategic relationships, and persevered even after some unanswered phone calls and emails to land her dream job.

Curious how she did it? (and how you can do it, too?)

Check out:
- The steps in the CCB process that will properly position you during your career transition
- The unexpected benefits of putting yourself out there and networking
- How looking at the positive, rather than getting stuck on the negative, is instrumental in helping you keep perspective on your career goals

When we look at career change, we know that taking on this big life change requires a great amount of time, energy, maybe a bit of financial planning, and a solid support system to lean on when the career change process becomes overwhelming.

One of the least-talked about topics of career change is your current and ongoing support system.

Everyone needs a support system as they approach any big life changes.

As much as our core supporters want to be there for us as we make this career change, many of them aren’t really sure how to approach the issue.

A lot of people who set goals do not include the most important people in their life in the process, but why? After all, the goals we set impact them, too.

If we fail to include these key people (whether that’s your spouse, partner, a roommate, boss, etc.), there is a lot that can stop you from reaching the goals you set:

For one, what if they don’t agree with the goal(s) you feel to be most important? If you’re not both on the same page, your biggest supporters can quickly turn into your biggest obstacles.

As I celebrate 4 years since I became self-employed full-time, I’m sharing the top 4 lessons I’ve learned while working with people making career changes:

  • It ALWAYS happens slower than you think it does.
  • It’s worth it to learn how to live intentionally.
  • If you know what you want, it’s easier to ask for what you want; AND when you ask for what you want, it’s much more likely to happen.
  • Time and strengths freedom makes for happier and more meaningful lives.

We all have disagreements from time to time, right?

Many of us, will voice our concerns to our boss and explain why our way is better. But, it’s not always with the right tone or attitude, so the boss stands his ground.

“These misconceptions are sort of incorrect expectations that make us feel frustrated because our expectations aren't met. Our arguments aren't bad. I think of them as either productive or unproductive. And so, really, the goal is to make them from unproductive to productive... I want to reframe disagreement as an opportunity to integrate a new perspective into your life.” - Buster Benson (today’s podcast guest)

Katie only saw one way out: She had to quit.

However, in our conversation, I helped Katie see a multitude of options available. Yes, quitting may be one of the solutions, but in my years of coaching people through career changes, I’ve realized jumping jobs or industries isn’t a catchall solution. In fact, many people end up right back in the same career dissatisfaction quickly after their move.

Some of the most common phrases I hear from clients include:

“I don’t think I can go any further.”

“I’m looking to be able to grow.”

Or in Katie’s specific case, “I’m a go-getter. I don’t feel like I can go get ‘em right now.”

Maybe you can relate. You feel stuck, and you only see one way out.

Here are some key questions to consider before you jump ship.

It’s likely that you’ve experienced working in a role for a period of time, and then you get a new boss.

Many times, this can cause people to fear that change - unwanted change - is coming.

What doesn’t usually happen, is that you take you take the role your new boss previously had.

But, this is exactly what Karen did. It started with her taking inventory of her strengths and assessing her options.

She realized that it was just a few small changes that could make a big difference in her career.

Don’t wait until you have “total understanding.” Don’t wait until you feel like you have a “perfect plan.”

Right now, we want to encourage you to put your new knowledge to work.

Most people find success in ANY area of their lives — from career to health to relationships — by taking IMPERFECT action BEFORE you think you’re ready, and then continue to make adjustments.

But what most people do instead is to wait. They think they’re not ready. They make the challenge in front of them SO HUGE in their brains that it’s nearly impossible to move forward!

Maybe you can relate.

We’ve put this 6 part audio course together as a guide to using your strengths to make a career pivot to work that makes you more happy more often.

If you haven’t already, start with the first episode as each one builds on the previous episode to help you learn how you can make a career (and a life out of your strengths) and why many others have chosen to do the same thing.

You know it’s coming, but it still freezes you in your tracks like a deer in the headlights.

Maybe it’s right after you sit down in the visitor’s chair, across the desk from the interviewer.

Or maybe it’s ten or fifteen minutes into your conversation- just when you start to think you might escape this time.

But then it hits you. The interviewer flips through your file, folds her hands on top of her desk, looks at you expectantly and says the words that strike fear in the hearts of every job-seeker:

“So…tell me about yourself.”

The more you know about what makes you truly happy and satisfied, the more you can bring it into your life.

Once you identify your strengths, you can identify what you want in your life. You can hone in on the types of activities you’re best at and that make you happiest. Then you can work backwards from there to figure out the types of jobs where you can find those activities… and what types of companies hire for those jobs!

This is the opposite approach that 99% of the world takes. Most people look at what they think their options are and try to make the best of those. They make their own barriers and limits by not considering what they really want and instead focus on what they think is probable or possible.

Unintentionally limiting yourself in that way will also unintentionally limit your happiness!

We’ve put this 6 part audio course together as a guide to using your strengths to make a career pivot to work that makes you more happy more often.

What the heck are Signature Strengths?

We’ve talked about how your signature strengths aren’t just skills like, “I’m really good with Excel.”

There’s more to it: It’s that intersection of things you’re really, really good at with things you really, really love — combined with your experiences, disposition, and a few shakes of both nature and nurture.

“Signature Strengths are your unique combination of experiences, skills, knowledge and even the way you’re wired. It’s the stuff that makes you, you.”

Often when you drill down to your signature strengths, these are the things you can’t stop doing if you tried, you can’t help it. Many times they come easy to you because you enjoy them and also you don’t recognize them because you don’t think that they’re that big of a deal.

We’ve put this 6 part audio course together as a guide to using your strengths to make a career pivot to work that makes you more happy more often.

It isn’t just things you’re good at, or things you’ve been praised for - although that’s part of the equation. Instead, we see it as the intersection of two things:

Your strengths: what you can truly be great at — maybe even the best in the world if you spent the time and energy developing them!

And

Your passions: what you enjoy and love.

Then add in your skills, experiences, knowledge and predispositions… and voila! You’ve got YOUR “signature strengths.”

Let’s start with a question: Why do you care about your strengths?

Maybe you’ve spent time looking at job opportunities online, getting depressed at how few jobs you’re qualified for, interested in, or willing to do for low pay. Or maybe you’ve recently had the realization that “this can’t be all there is” to work

You might have even taken every assessment, personality test and quiz out there only to find out that you’re still in the same place.

You, just like many of the people we work with, found out the hard way that the knowledge that being a “relator” or “achiever” or “learner” is interesting, but you still don’t have a raise, a new career, or work that makes you happy.

We’ve put this 6 part audio course together as a guide to using your strengths to make a career pivot to work that makes you more happy more often.

If you look into your past, you’ll see many different experiences, from hobbies, volunteer work, to career experiences.

Many times, these different things may seem disconnected. They may even seem insignificant in the scope of your career.

But, the threads of your experiences come together to create the person you are. When you discover the connection between these threads, you can begin to identify these “secret” strengths that have always been in your life. When you know what these are, they help you unlock your ideal career.

Today, Jennifer Seaver Stokes shares how she followed the threads in her life, and they led to her ideal career.

Big Decisions. You know how these work. Our brains usually fight us and want us to stay in our comfort zones.

Plus if you’re like me you can turn nearly anything into logic. Yes I know that I’m not loving my work and my boss is a overbearing but there could be another opportunity 4 months from now.

Many people find themselves torn when it comes to staying in the same place vs. making a change.

They know and feel deep down inside that something isn't right, and they struggle with taking a chance to actually make a change in their career.

Why do we fight what we know to be true in our core?

We see how others reach their goals and we think we must follow in their footsteps to reach the same success.

But, the truth is: we don't have to follow them.

If you want to take more control of your career or you are about to have an awkward conversation with your boss, this episode is for you.

There’s never an ideal time to get laid off or completely change your career, but a professional setback might actually lead to a far better opportunity you’ve never considered before.

Melissa Shapiro was already contemplating a career change, but then was laid off before she could position herself for the next move. She discovered that evolving and adapting weren’t only important for success – it was absolutely necessary to move up in the professional world.

Melissa took her new-found time and energy to focus on asking herself big questions that led to her successful career change.

This might come as a bit of a shocker, but we don’t always post our job openings for our company.

[Gasp]

“I thought you were in HR for years, Scott. How could you?”

I was. I worked in many different companies and sectors. Government, Manufacturing, Fortune 500. I’ve been on all sides of the table too.

When a hiring manager has a need, they usually are doing their best to make sure they’ve got someone in mind already.

I saw with my own eyes each of those organizations also hired without posting publicly and hired outside of their “normal policies and procedures.”

Does this make them bad companies? No, I don’t think so. In fact, I think in some cases it might even make them more responsible!

But, all the situations that were “exceptions to the rule” (i.e. not posted) were either better jobs, higher paying than normal, or jobs created specifically with a person in mind.

Let me ask you a question: When do you have the most power to negotiate?

Out of all the possible times, the very best time to negotiate your pay, job, terms or anything else is when you’re making a career change to a new company and new job. Specifically right after they’ve made you an offer.

Why is that?

Well, Let's talk about some truths from their perspective. Once you get to where they have given you an offer it is a big deal for you and for them. Very often they have spent a huge amount of time going through the process to decide they want you. That is an important factor. They are emotionally invested and have decided it's going to be you in the role, not someone else.

Depending on your level, they’ve likely had other people involved in the process and the probably had to have different approvals from their boss or finance or HR or the CEO. Someone else probably had to say yes or commit to you so they aren’t excited to change anytime soon. Because of that you have more power to negotiate than any other point in time.

Keep in mind this is only after they make an offer. None of this applies while they are considering it.

Have you identified your big “value-adds” from your past job experiences and how you can apply them to any industry?

Have you wondered how to open more doors of opportunity during informational interviews?

Several times over the past several months, we brought some past guests back onto the podcast to catch up with where they are now and how things have changed since we last had them on the podcast.

So this week, we are bringing Mike Bigelow back onto the podcast. Tomorrow, I’m going to share the recent conversation I had with him, where we explore how his life is going now that it’s been 2 years since his career change.

But to help us understand where he is now, today we’re going to hear Mike’s story from the last time he was on the show.

I've been studying high performers and top performers for approaching 20 years now. Lots of things have surprised me about how top performers do things differently. But quite possibly the most surprising is how high performing people ask for help. It’s completely different than the average person. I found that most people don't think about this as a skill set. What I've learned though by studying top performers, there are actually very specific things that they do when they go to ask for help. I want to be able to teach you these to you so that you can be able to get the type of help that you need so I've created a formula with five very simple parts to show you how to do this and break it down.

Before I show you those five key parts of how high performers ask for help, let me ask you a question:

What do you think is the secret to why high performers get help so easily (and we enjoy helping them) and why it’s so painful to have to help many other people?

Is it that they are genetically endowed with likeability, or that we’re just biased as human beings to want to help people who are already doing well?

Maybe, but I don’t think so.

What if you get rejected from what you thought was going to be your purpose? What if the work you thought would be meaningful isn’t?

When you get rejected from that - even just one rejection - you start to really question all of your skill sets and the journey that you've been on.

If that’s you - you’re going to learn how to turn an end into a beginning of what’s next in your life.

When thinking about meaningful work and the various pieces that need to come together, it might cause you to wonder, “Are these even possible together, and, if so, how do real people actually find these opportunities?”

With the help of science and some real people who have done a great job finding meaningful work and career happiness, we’re going to break down the answers for you.

So, the question becomes: “How do you find this elusive work that’s meaningful and meets your other needs like a certain amount of income?”

Organizations that focus on employee experiences create more profit. Employees want more meaningful work and work experiences and are willing to take less pay for it?

So why haven’t companies really started paying attention to this? Or are some organizations beginning to wake up and realize that more and more of the workforce is wanting more meaningful work?

There’s so much conflicting information out there about what creates more fulfilling, more desirable work:

  • Is it the job?
  • Is it the company?
  • Is it the type of role or occupation?
  • Is meaningful work really even obtainable in the first place?

The short answer is “yes,” but in reality it happens differently than what most of the world thinks it does.

Many of us get exhausted. Maybe it’s because of a lack of sleep. Maybe it’s from working too much or too hard. Maybe it’s from stress.

But being exhausted doesn’t mean that it has to be a negative in your life.

Laura Morrison was used to be exhausted, but now it feels different.

"So, I still leave work exhausted. It's just that now the exhaustion is from kind of flexing my brain and personal development and kind of much more excitement about the work that I'm doing and being invested in it.”

“Now looking back at it. I never really asked myself the questions of whether I wanted to to do this. It is just normal. Many of us do that.”

That’s what Michal Balass had said when I asked her where her career started.

She went on to explain that she spent years getting her Doctorate and when it came time to get a job she did it without thinking… because that’s what you do! It is normal.

Unfortunately doing things the normal way without question put Michal in the same place many others are:

In a job that isn’t a great fit and doesn’t particularly line up with what you want out of life!

Michal tolerated it for years. (probably for much too long)

On the Happen To Your Career podcast, we have shown many career changes and the changes that come to our lives as a whole. We have talked with dozens of people on the podcast that we have personally worked with to make these changes. But one thing we haven’t really shown you is the fact that change isn’t just a one-time event.

As we continue to learn about ourselves and as we grow, our lives change. This is often in the form of changes in family (having more kids, kids growing up), moving to a different house or city, or developing new skills. This growth also results in changes in your goals and desires.

You begin to see a bigger and better picture of what you want to do in your life.

Over the next several months, we are going to be bringing some past guests back onto the podcast to catch up with where they are now and how things have changed since we last had them on the podcast.

So this week, we are bringing Michal Balass back onto the podcast. Tomorrow, I’m going to share the recent conversation I had with her; but to help us understand where she is now, today we’re going to hear her story from the last time she was on the show.

Here’s the reality: Decisions are hard. They don’t sound like they should be hard, but they stop people every single day, usually many many times a day from doing something productive.

So much so that I personally spend much of my energy eliminating unimportant decision making from my life that I won’t care about years or even weeks from now. Decisions like what do I have for breakfast or what should I wear today or what order should I begin my day take only small amounts of energy, time and effort separately but they start to add up quickly.  And Big decisions like where should I spend my time and effort and energy in my career sometimes seem almost overwhelming to tackle.

Our minds are amazing.

We can do absolutely unbelievable things with our brains! One thing we can do is we can very effectively filter and sort information. This is a huge benefit to us, but can also cause a lot of problems in the form of cognitive bias.

This just means that as human beings the way our brains function can actually bias us toward or away from certain things like steering us away from those areas that might be uncomfortable and toward familiarity.

But what if you could take some of this knowledge about your brain and use it to turn potentially negative biases into an advantage.

15 years ago, the first time I really realized that you could hack your brain’s normal functions, my mind was blown, too.

Remember in the last lesson when we talked about how most people miss the simple logic: you have to know where you’re going to be able to figure out how to get there.

Well, this applies to more than just the job you have or a business that you run.

Just try to separate out your work from the rest of your life!

You can’t.

The people you spend the most time with or don’t spend the most time with is often influenced by your work.

So is your personal growth as a person, where you physically spend your time, and even the amount of money that you earn.

For this reason, it’s incredibly important for you to understand not just what you want in your work but also what you want in every other area of your life!

And guess what else, anything that you want in your life isn’t going to happen by accident.

By the way, if you want to get this sent straight to your email box to you can always go to FigureItOut.co and drop in your email address. And that will get sent right to your email box. Or you can text HAPPEN to 44222 and you get the exact same thing.

What do you want?

It’s a simple enough question.

I’ll bet you can't easily answer that question?

Go ahead and give it a try! I’ll wait!

Harder than it seems right?

But what if you could intentionally and succintly answer that question? When you have the answer to what you really want in your career and in your life and really go after it, it allows you to do things most people would consider exceptional or even impossible.

And that is exactly what we’re going to cover today!

IS REFLECTION ON THE PAST YOUR KEY TO CAREER HAPPINESS?

The short answer is “H-E- double hockey sticks to the NO”.

(mostly because I love hockey and a little because reflection is not the magic bullet alone!)

But what’s the longer more nuanced answer?

To be clear; reflecting on the past alone is not going to get you where you want to go in your career or your life. It will take intentional action to move toward work that fits you, your values, and your strengths (and even your income expectations).

But what’s also true is that for the action to be intentional you must know exactly what you want.

How do you do that?

MOST PEOPLE THINK THAT THEY KNOW THEIR STRENGTHS…

I hear them say things like “I learn fast” or “I’m good with people” but most people have not spent enough time or effort to truly understand what it is that they are great at or have the potential to be great at!

Maybe these are true, but these aren’t specific enough to really be what you are great at. What is it that makes you great with people, What is it specifically that you enjoy in the interaction with others, is it even the interaction at all, or maybe something else.

When I hear something as vague as “I’m good with people”, which I do in maybe 7 out of every 10 interviews with professionals, I immediately try to start digging to understand what they really actually mean.

It could be that they are great at: relating to others OR communicating with people OR helping people problem solve OR building relationships quickly OR about a million other possibilities.

What on earth do you really mean?

As human beings, when we get stuck, we tend to focus on one thing that we latch onto as the “reason” why. Or one thing that if we could only do, it would solve all of our problems.

It’s never just one thing. It’s always more nuanced than that.

There is one thing that is very clear though, The reasons why you think you’re stuck and the reasons why you’re actually stuck, are two completely different things.

One of the most common career change misconceptions is that you’ll have to start over – that all of your experience will go out the window if you make a change. It’s difficult to imagine a scenario where you don’t take a step down… where you actually get a promotion on top of finally finding work you actually love. How can you make that happen? In today’s episode, we’re revealing the 4 most common ways that people change careers (without starting over!) and talking to 4 people from each category.

What you’ll learn

Are your skills transferable to your dream career?

Many people don’t believe that their skills can apply to the career they are desiring to move into. People tend to put their skills and experience into boxes and can’t see how the skills of one box can apply to another box.

The truth, though, is that most of your skills and experience CAN transfer, even if you don’t yet know what your dream career is.

We’ve developed an entire process to do this. Want to know how? Listen immediately (press play already) and learn all the things!

Everyone I talk to wants freedom, until they realize how it really actually works.

One thing that comes up frequently while coaching people through career changes is the idea of obtaining freedom in their life and work. Freedom means different things for everyone. Sometimes it’s freedom to travel, or financial freedom, or just having the freedom and flexibility to pick up your kids from school.

“For so so long, freedom meant the ability to be able to do what I want, when I want, where I want.”

Natalie Sisson, The Suitcase Entrepreneur, traveled the world for many years - living and working wherever she wanted to. She now has a completely different definition than most about what freedom actually means for her and some of what she has learned from talking with hundreds, or even thousands, of people about what freedom means.

Part 2: Where are they now series.

Have you’ve said ‘yes’ to a job offer, even though it didn’t match up with your values?

Matt Toy, also took a job offer, but realized, like many of the people we work with, that what he could be doing was staring him in the face the whole time.

He was also faced with decisions that would compromise his values, but he was unwilling to make the sacrifice.

Have you noticed any recurring themes in your life?

These patterns can range from the habits you form, the hobbies you enjoy, the work you choose, the tasks you hate, the type of people you surround yourself with, and so on.

Digging deeper into your own patterns in your career and life is the first piece of research you need to do before you start down the career change road, but we also know that sometimes it is hard to accept those patterns for what they truly are.

Matthew Toy struggled with accepting what everyone else around him knew about how big of an impact his own passion for practicing yoga had on his life.

As kids, we all have dreams and aspirations for what we want to do when we grow up. However, as we get older, we tend to put down our dreams to pursue “reality” - or what we perceive is reality. Those dreams we had no longer fit into what we consider realistic.

Years ago when I first started Happen To Your Career, my good friend Mark and I created an 8-Day mini-course to help people begin to figure out what they really wanted to be doing for their career and their life. We’ve now had over 25,000 people go through that mini-course. One of the exercises in that course involves declaring 3 wildly unrealistic things you want to do, be or become these could be occupations, jobs, roles, whatever you wanted, Sky’s the limit. The only rule is that it has to be wildly unrealistic.

We started getting thousands of responses emailed to us and there was something interesting that we noticed right away. They’re all big goals sure, but what else? None of them are actually impossible or unachievable.

What does this tell us? It means that the things we believe to be wildly unrealistic are only unrealistic because we believe them to be. It’s about the story that we tell ourselves.

How do people actually accomplish wildly unrealistic goals especially when you have reality standing in your way, like a full time job or obligations like kids that like to eat, or saving for their college. Or the simple fact that you have only so much energy in a single day before you pass out?

Reality.

We all have our current reality. This might come from obligations, parents, kids, work, serving on that board that you agreed to back before you realized how much time it was going to take, yes it’s for a good cause but maybe you didn’t actually think it would be an additional 20 hours a month.

Whatever your reality is. All of us have it. The question becomes: How do you accomplish career and life goals that you might consider to be wildly unrealistic when “reality” is always pressing on us?

When you set out to achieve wildly unrealistic goals you can always assume the path you follow will be the one less taken. This is, of course, also true with wildly unrealistic career changes!

Allison and I continue to delve deeper into the things that led to her career change (and changed her entire life, too!).

As she completed the Clifton’s Strengthsfinder assessment during her CCB course, Allison discovered the formula for her own career happiness. She says:

confidence + strengths + motion = dream career

She began to imagine a career she could be passionate about. When asked the question, “What are some of the things you can’t stop doing?” Allison found herself responding, “I can’t stop asking people if they like their job.”

This answer helped her see that she was obsessed with career fulfillment. For five or six years, she had been showing interest in others’ career success. Even when she was shifting gears with her job title, she kept asking people whether or not they loved their work.

“Looking back at the big picture, even though my jobs were so different, every single job, whether it was part of the role or not—if it was just interactions with employees or how I felt about myself in that position—everything pointed to my dream job.”

Allison realized she was good at simplifying processes for people and creating new programs. She had fun communicating to people in a language they understood. When she thought about her signature strengths, she realized she could use all of these skills in helping others find fulfillment.

Today, Allison is a professional career coach. She’s an entrepreneur living out her multipotentiality, and she can honestly say she’s discovered her dream career.

Very few people will find career happiness in this life, whether it’s because they don’t believe it’s available to them or because they can’t identify what would even bring fulfillment, but Allison is living proof that you can do work you love and be paid well for it.

Allison Kolberg (Curbow) was good at everything. The problem was…she couldn’t find something she enjoyed doing.

As a self-proclaimed Upholder (defined in Gretchen Rubin’s Four Tendencies), Allison had a knack, or rather a compulsion, for meeting expectations.

This habit led to a “see and conquer” mentality in the career world. She’d see a job posting, and whether or not she genuinely wanted to do the work, she’d take on the challenge. In other words, she’d shift into whatever shape necessary to accomplish the goals of that role.

While pursuing her degree, Allison worked as an office manager in a typical 8-hour office environment. Not too long into her role, she realized the clock-in-clock-out-pushing-papers desk job wasn’t for her. Recognizing a need for hands-on work, Allison routed her college studies for a career in oil and gas.

Upon graduation, she was hired as a High-pressure Pump Operator in Anchorage, Alaska. Looking back, Allison says she was drawn to the job’s hands-on nature and the opportunity to work in big picture operations. She felt a special love for the procedures and problem-solving ability required for her two week on/two week off schedule. She was good at her job, but the love didn’t last.

Allison comes on the podcast today with Scott to tell her story of how she made her transition.

After she made the changes in her life to create her career change, she realized that it was more than a career change - it was a life change.

On today’s episode, she explains one of the struggles she had:

“I had so many different skills and interests, and I jumped around so much that one job sometimes didn't look anything like the next job. I was grasping at straws to try to fit all these aspects of my life into one [career] that I didn't even know was possible. So, I just jumped from job to job.

I felt like a flip-flopper. It didn't feel very good. When I would want to move on to the next thing, I felt like I had to subdue or discredit the parts of myself that were in the other position.”

By the time she got through her career transition, she was able to look back with better clarity:

“Looking back at the big picture, even though my jobs were so different, every single job, whether it was part of the role or not—if it was just interactions with employees or how I felt about myself in that position—everything pointed to my dream job.”

In this episode, Gia tells us how she was always a girl who had a diary growing up. Nowadays, Gia got back into journaling and starts every morning writing down what she is grateful for. The other questions she writes about are what she is looking forward to and her top priorities. The most significant benefit Gia has seen with her journaling is self-awareness; having a better connection with yourself will provide clarity on what really matters in life. The last time Gia found clarity was after a year of working on a tech startup. Gia was struggling with whether she should invest more time and effort or close it and move on to something else. After journaling for a few months, she got clarity on precisely what she needed to do.

Free flow journaling is another method Gia uses to get clarity on her thoughts and mindset. Writing without restraint is best for those situations when you cannot quite articulate what seems off about a particular topic. For instance, Gia is trying to move her child into the public school system; she has been free flow journaling to articulate the struggle she is having inside her head. Putting it down on paper really gets the juices flowing and allows you to make better decisions.

When Gia would ask her female clients what they accomplished in their careers over the past year, they could not articulate a response. If you cannot answer how you add value to a company, most likely you will not be getting that job. Gia says women need to be able to confidently and clearly articulate how they bring value to the table. One way to start thinking about your answer is by writing down what you do every single day. After a few months, you will have more details and could clearly explain how your presence adds value. Gia tells her clients to keep tabs on the following six areas:

  1. The actual work that you did today.
  2. What did you do to build your brand?
  3. What are your community contributions?
  4. Did you invest time in your professional skills?
  5. Did you invest time in your soft skills?
  6. How you went above and beyond.

Once people started journaling these six things, often they would realize they were lacking in certain areas, and it would result in intentional action taking. For example, when someone realizes it has been weeks and they have done nothing to build their brand, that person would start taking actionable steps to increase their brand awareness. Some barriers that come up for Gia’s clients when journaling about their workday are procrastination and time. People always claim they do not have enough time to reflect and journal. Gia suggests opening up Google Drive and take thirty seconds to write down what you have done before you leave work for the day.

Enjoy the show!

Melanie, like you, identifies as a multipod.

When Melanie Buford was making a college decision, she felt torn between two very different directions: On the one hand, she had a knack for math, and she felt she could excel in an engineering type role. On the other hand, Melanie felt fascinated by psychology and humanities. These two areas of interest had little to no overlap, so not only was Melanie choosing between majors but also universities.

This was the first time Melanie experienced the familiar pull of the multipotentialite journey.

After college, Melanie accepted a role with Americorps and moved to San Francisco, where she participated in a program called Public Allies. Working for Americorps was a combination job, as Melanie served at a nonprofit for four days per week and spent her Fridays completing Public Allies’ social justice leadership development program. Melanie and her coworkers were passionate, multifaceted people.

Fast forward to now, and Melanie has become a professor of career education for the University of Cincinnati, researcher and nonfiction writer, nonprofit supporter, and science fiction writer. She enjoys helping multi-talented students discover a future that fits their unique wiring, and she loves digging into data on multipotentialites, personality tests, and strengths assessments.

Is staying at a job you hate holding you back from happiness? What if you’ve changed careers…and the new work wasn’t quite the fit you thought it would be?

After helping a couple thousand people make career changes, you notice a few commonalities.

We’ve realized that EVERYONE has barriers to making their change. Especially the busy, high achieving peeps that we’ve worked with. You are no exception!

You know how you always hear those success stories of what other people have done? If you’re like me (or you’re human), sometimes they can make you a little jealous or depressed.

How come it always works out so well for those other people?

Well, here’s the hidden reality behind every single one of the success stories we’ve published:

Zero of them were easy, AND none of them went perfectly.

In fact, we find that much of the time we are helping our students make it easier to change to work they love by focusing on the right things, but focusing on the right things alone doesn’t automatically make you successful.

In today’s episode, I talk about how career happiness really works. In fact, this episode is one of the lessons I teach inside Career Change Bootcamp.

A little while back, I had a Skype call with a former Google employee who made a transition into a role that fits his strengths even better. He is totally thrilled!

I wanted to tell you about it because you might be thinking “who on earth chooses to leave Google? That’s the holy grail of dream jobs!” And that’s what most people think from the outside, right?

But a big trap that it’s easy to fall into when you’re searching for jobs is comparing your insides to someone else’s outsides.

For example, being in a job that looks like a dream job on the outside doesn’t mean it’s going to be the dream fit for YOUR inner values, strengths and interests.

I can’t tell you how many people find HTYC because they’re in a job they thought would be great, but isn’t — it ends up being someone else’s dream and not their own. Or, we get emails every day about people who feel like they can’t get clarity on what their next career move looks like, so they’re stuck in a mental pressure cooker wanting to make a change forward but not knowing how.

Does that sound like you? If so, grab a pen and paper because I have a ton of lessons I’ve learned from personally coaching 1,100 people through career transitions that I want to share with you to save you time, headaches, and help you make the transition you’re dreaming of happen.

In today’s episode, I share 6 keys to career happiness and then how to use this information to make your change and how to focus your time to be most effective.

I vividly remember being in a job that wasn’t fulfilling at all. When I was there, I didn’t understand how this whole career happiness thing worked and honestly thought that if I could just get to a better job situation then it would solve all my problems.

Which means that many of us are going about the job change somewhat blindly, we’re looking at job postings online or trying to network or updating our LinkedIn profiles even spending time going on interviews but the problem is that we don’t even know exactly what a fulfilling career looks like for us.

Now here’s the tricky part, we as human beings are pretty terrible at determining what will actually make us happy.

So what happens when you’re in your role working for a company and, for the most part, it's been great.

You've been there for a while, and you know lots of good things have come out of it.

You've worked with a good team and you've had a lot of fun.

It's been pretty meaningful, except …

Now a lot of those things have either stopped or changed.

Whether it's caused by a company merger or a new boss or a completely different situation.

And that is that is where our next podcast guest found themselves.

I say guest, but this is actually a bit of a different episode.

We've done this once or twice before where we've shared an actual coaching session with you, allowing you to sit in as a fly on the wall, listening to somebody that we've worked with.

On today’s episode, you're going to hear Elizabeth begin in the early stages of identifying what she really wants and needs.

And even more importantly than that, some of the ways that I guide her through to help begin making this happen immediately.

You're not going to hear any magic bullets in this episode (because there are none in reality), but you are going to hear some things that you may be able to integrate into your own personal life and career change right away.

“Most of the people I know, and coach, are recovering people-pleasers…”

New York Times Best Selling Author, Michael Hyatt said this to me in our recent conversation.

In fact, I’m a recovering people-pleaser myself.

In my first professional job, I working between 80-90 hours a week. Part of that was because the job was a bad fit. Part of that was because there was a huge expectation to work a ton of hours. And part of that was that I said “yes” to everything my boss asked me to do.

Absolutely everything.

Saying “yes” to every project - to every request.

“Yes, sir, I can make that happen!”

“Yes, I can get that extra presentation done.”

Saying “yes” to all that took a bad situation and turned it into a totally intolerable situation.

Saying “yes” to too many things can hold you back from career happiness. At first, you may be excited that you’re the person that everyone can depend on.

But then it changes.

People start asking you to do more and more because “______ always finds a way to get it done.” In fact, it gets to the point that the people make you their first stop.

This can cause resentment, stress, and fatigue - none of which produce career happiness. But you also find it difficult - or impossible - to stop saying “yes.”

Saying “no” is exactly what we talk about in today’s episode with Michael Hyatt. Michael is a best-selling author (multiple times over) and was previously the CEO of a publishing company before starting his own company.

Michael is also a self-admitted, recovering people-pleaser. As such, throughout past few decades, he has had to learn to say “no” gracefully. In other words, he had to protect his own time and priorities. At one point, he said it this way:

“The way that you can give people a really firm ‘No’ is to have a really firm ‘yes’ on the other side of it.”

Also, he gives specific examples of how he can say “no” to a request, but still present a solution for the person. And people thank him for saying “no.”

Listen to this episode to hear the whole conversation, including:

  • Why it’s so hard for you to say “No” to people...and what to do about it
  • How to get back hours of free time each week
  • The connection between having a vision and conquering daily distractions
  • Using elimination, automation, and delegation to crush even more tasks on your to-do list
  • Why you need more than one routine to run your day
  • The most important things you can do to be more focused and more productive

Also, as an added bonus, Michael shares the best advice on how to stay happily married for 40 years.

“What advice would you give someone who’s decided they want to make a career change?”

What came back was surprising! It didn’t have anything to do with the best resume ever or the best tactic to market your skills or even the steps to take

Nope! Instead it turns out that all of them described making a career change as a journey and there is far more important advice to consider.

We’ve taken the advice from 6 successful career changers and put it into this episode.

If we are always looking for external milestones, like a new job title or pay increase, without first addressing the internal stuff, we’ll always be on the hunt.

We’ll constantly be looking for that feeling, and asking ourselves that question: “Is this it?”

During this week’s podcast episode, I dug deep with Kelly, a Career Change Bootcamp graduate and a woman who went through a radical mindset shift a couple of months ago.

She was in the same exact place. She had all of the external things: a great job at Linkedin, an awesome apartment in the Big Apple, a savings account that most of us could only imagine…but she still wasn’t happy. From the outside, it looked like she had everything.

But on the inside, she was struggling to answer those big life questions: What does it mean to lead a meaningful, purposeful life?

Have you ever considered trying to start your own coaching business? (A career coach, a fitness coach, a relationship coach, a leadership coach, anything like that?)

You might be the kind of person who’s naturally gifted in helping others, but you don’t want to become a pastor or a psychotherapist, so going into coaching feels like a perfect next step for your career.

Coaching can be an AMAZING career fit for many people -- and there’s a huge need for actually good coaches out there -- but there are a lot of realities about pursuing it as a full-time career path that you’ll want to know before you quit your job and start the business. Being in love with the dream of calling yourself a coach can be very different from truly having a passion for the day-to-day life of being one.

For example, how much do you enjoy sales conversations? Working for yourself is an eat-what-you-kill kind of job, so you’re going to spend a TON of time bringing in clients so you can keep the lights on and pay the bills.

And, how much time out of your week would you estimate you’ll be on the phone with coaching clients? Whatever you’re guessing, guess again and listen to this podcast episode with Marc Mawhinney to hear about what it was like for him (and for Scott) in building their coaching businesses.

On this episode, you’ll learn how Marc got into coaching (and the books that have been his biggest inspiration), how building a coaching business is a bit like being a modern-day caveman, how to ensure you’re not getting paid in meatballs, and how to decide when (or if) you need a coaching certification.

You’ve probably heard people say things like. “Big Dreams take time” or “that type of success takes time” or my absolute favorite. “Just give it a little time!” But what if the key accomplishing wildly unrealistic goals didn’t have anything to do with time? What if that was one of the most common misconceptions that gets repeated all over the world. This is episode 3 of a 3 part series on how to accomplish wildly unrealistic career goals.

Years ago when I first started Happen To Your Career, my good friend Mark and I created an 8 Day mini-course to help people begin to figure out what they really wanted to be doing for their career and their life.

None of them them are actually impossible or unachievable.

What does this tell us? It means that the things we believe to be wildly unrealistic are only unrealistic because we believe them to be. It’s about the story that we tell ourselves.

Everyone and their mother is going to email you about your resolutions and goals now that it’s the beginning of 2018.

I don’t want to do that to you. Plus you already know I have a serious aversion to doing what everyone else is doing?

What do you notice about the Paradigm shifting changes?

  1. The average person can’t imagine how it can work in their own life.
  2. Most of the world can’t “just do that”.
  3. You might automatically say, “that could never work for me”

It takes completely reframing your future to be able to achieve a paradigm shifting change.

In this conversation with we get deep into how:

  • Learn how to take the goals you are passionate and excited about and take the next little steps to turn them into a reality this year.
  • How to change your limiting beliefs from a negative into a positive.
  • Learn how to use confirmation bias as a benefit to gain goal success.
  • Learn how important it is to put words to and vocalize the whisper of ideas you have been feeling.
  • Get help identifying the little secret beliefs and limiting factors you tell yourself that are causing you a roadblock.
  • Learn to stop playing negative Jedi mind tricks on yourself and start feeling the positive force within.
  • Reframe your negative beliefs into positive beliefs and learn how to reinforce those positive beliefs with data points to give you forward momentum.
  • How 60 minutes of your time brainstorming can open up numerous possibilities.

As far as I know perfection doesn’t exist because it’s subjective. This of course means that if we are after perfection, then we are already setting ourselves up for failure.

Now here’s the deal. The people we work with are often pretty highly self aware people. Even still they (and me too, many times) don’t recognize when we’re having moments of perfectionism that are holding us back.

Sure. Feeling safe and at ease is great and all, but what goals have you ever achieved by staying in your comfort zone??

We’re willing to bet on not many at all.

Nobody ever achieves much by staying in their comfort zone.

WHY?

Well, achieving goals requires you to aim for something just a little bitout of your reach.

Having a goal makes you look forward to something attainable that may not be in your comfort zone (at the moment).

Then the question of how to get out of your comfort zone comes up.

When it comes to career change, more likely than not you’ll be faced with the choice to break out of your comfort zone to progress down a new path that may be full of unknowns.

Long before you even begin thinking about going on an interview, you need to get into the right mindset. This accounts for nearly 80% of your interview success!

Having a confident, present mindset allows you to head into your future interviews with ease. It channels your nerves (those sweaty palms and racing heart) into excitement instead. And, it allows you to be yourself.

In order to get into this mindset though, you have to know yourself well, and respect your past experiences. You need to understand your career equity. And, that takes introspection.

That introspection doesn’t come overnight either. It’s a practice that builds up over time, which is why “cramming” for interviews isn’t effective. Being true self in an interview comes down to self-development.
