“I am a former educator. So I have a background in early childhood education. And my views changed slightly after I had children and started raising them and started looking at careers and world life experiences differently.”
Even though most of us aren’t former educators, I’m sure most of us parents have a similar experience when we have children and begin raising them. The above quote came from my wife, Alyssa. She joins me on the podcast this week as we talk about how to prepare children for their future careers.
Since we have a company that focuses on helping people with their careers, we have all the answers and are preparing our kids perfectly. Maybe that’s a little of an exaggeration. We don't do it perfectly. But we do have a pretty significant head start because, every single day, we get to see people many, many years later and what's worked out for them, and what hasn't worked out for them.
There are a lot of resources that help people prepare their kids for college, but that’s a limited approach. We need to prepare our kids to be ready after college. Listen to the podcast today to help you work with your kids and prepare them for their future careers.

We have done well over 300 episodes over the past 7 years. I have had a shared a lot of fantastic conversations right here on the podcast to help you create your own career happiness. One problem with having over 300 episodes, is that some episodes tend to get buried. Today, I’d like to dig up one of those great conversations I had 7 years ago - it was actually the 3rd episode we ever released. When we originally talked she has written 1 book, but now she has written 3 more books. Robert was in a VP level role, earning great money and enjoying life and work. He was well known around his industry. He was great at what he did. Things were pretty good overall… Until they weren’t! Robert got laid off. No big deal right. A great opportunity to take some time and get a way. (Thanks soft landings and severance!) Except when it came time to go back to work: 8 months passed. Then 10, 12… 18 months passed and he’d had a few interviews but nothing had panned out. He and his partner were pulling their hair out a bit trying to figure out what was going on. He’s a smart guy, he gets results, why wasn’t this working? They had been through everything, was it his interview style? Simply unlucky? Was he coming off as desperate? That’s where I had the opportunity to meet Robert. As he was trying to figure out what was working and what wasn’t. It turns out Robert’s answer wasn’t what you’d think it would be.

The cost for staying in your job is higher than you think, and Audrey learned that the hard way. She was a talented Operations Manager working in the Events and Hospitality industry in New York City. She’d given much of herself to the job and had been rewarded with increasing responsibility, perpetual “thank yous” …and an increasing distaste for her work because what she valued most didn’t align with what the company valued. When she came to us for help, it became apparent that the genuine, highly caring, no-holds-barred person that she was (and wanted to be more often) was being hampered because of the job she was working in. This inability to be herself for 70 hours a week became so frustrating for her that it sparked an 11-month long journey to figure out what she really wanted and fight off the mental barriers that were keeping her stuck! So how did she go from teary days staying at a job she hated to getting paid $20,000 more with a career that allowed her to be who she is? Take a listen to Audrey’s story and find out!

Many times people realize that they are not where they should be, doing what they should be doing, but they’re afraid to make a change. They’re afraid of what negative consequences may happen if they make a change. Maybe they make up excuses like:
And I totally get these. It can be scary when you face the unknown. But, on the other hand, what if the change was actually going to improve your situation - not make it worse? As I’ve worked with thousands of people making career changes, getting over this hurdle is one of the best things that has happened in their lives. They’ve been able to find the work that really fits them. In many cases, they’ve been able to negotiate better salaries and benefits. They’ve been able to spend more quality time with their families. Our guest today was actually a podcast listener for a long time, and then we had the opportunity to work with her on her recent career change. Moving from Eastern Europe to the UK, Karolina began working as an accountant. Everything was great...for six years.

Katie only saw one way out: She had to quit. However, in our conversation, I helped Katie see a multitude of options available. Yes, quitting may be one of the solutions, but in my years of coaching people through career changes, I’ve realized jumping jobs or industries isn’t a catchall solution. The more you know about what makes you truly happy and satisfied, the more you can bring it into your life. Once you identify your strengths, you can identify what you want in your life. You can hone in on the types of activities you’re best at and that make you happiest. Then you can work backwards from there to figure out the types of jobs where you can find those activities… and what types of companies hire for those jobs! This is the opposite approach that 99% of the world takes. Most people look at what they think their options are and try to make the best of those. They make their own barriers and limits by not considering what they really want and instead focus on what they think is probable or possible. Unintentionally limiting yourself in that way will also unintentionally limit your happiness!

What the heck are Signature Strengths? We’ve talked about how your signature strengths aren’t just skills like, “I’m really good with Excel.” There’s more to it: It’s that intersection of things you’re really, really good at with things you really, really love — combined with your experiences, disposition, and a few shakes of both nature and nurture. “Signature Strengths are your unique combination of experiences, skills, knowledge and even the way you’re wired. It’s the stuff that makes you, you.” Often when you drill down to your signature strengths, these are the things you can’t stop doing if you tried, you can’t help it. Many times they come easy to you because you enjoy them and also you don’t recognize them because you don’t think that they’re that big of a deal.

Big Decisions. You know how these work. Our brains usually fight us and want us to stay in our comfort zones. Plus if you’re like me you can turn nearly anything into logic. Yes I know that I’m not loving my work and my boss is a overbearing but there could be another opportunity 4 months from now. Many people find themselves torn when it comes to staying in the same place vs. making a change. Let me ask you a question: When do you have the most power to negotiate? Out of all the possible times, the very best time to negotiate your pay, job, terms or anything else is when you’re making a career change to a new company and new job. Specifically right after they’ve made you an offer. Why is that? Well, Let's talk about some truths from their perspective. Once you get to where they have given you an offer it is a big deal for you and for them. Very often they have spent a huge amount of time going through the process to decide they want you. That is an important factor. They are emotionally invested and have decided it's going to be you in the role, not someone else. Depending on your level, they’ve likely had other people involved in the process and the probably had to have different approvals from their boss or finance or HR or the CEO. Someone else probably had to say yes or commit to you so they aren’t excited to change anytime soon. Because of that you have more power to negotiate than any other point in time. Keep in mind this is only after they make an offer. None of this applies while they are considering it. |

I've been studying high performers and top performers for approaching 20 years now. Lots of things have surprised me about how top performers do things differently. But quite possibly the most surprising is how high performing people ask for help. It’s completely different than the average person. I found that most people don't think about this as a skill set. What I've learned though by studying top performers, there are actually very specific things that they do when they go to ask for help. I want to be able to teach you these to you so that you can be able to get the type of help that you need so I've created a formula with five very simple parts to show you how to do this and break it down. Here’s the reality: Decisions are hard. They don’t sound like they should be hard, but they stop people every single day, usually many many times a day from doing something productive. So much so that I personally spend much of my energy eliminating unimportant decision making from my life that I won’t care about years or even weeks from now. Decisions like what do I have for breakfast or what should I wear today or what order should I begin my day take only small amounts of energy, time and effort separately but they start to add up quickly. And Big decisions like where should I spend my time and effort and energy in my career sometimes seem almost overwhelming to tackle.

Our minds are amazing. We can do absolutely unbelievable things with our brains! One thing we can do is we can very effectively filter and sort information. This is a huge benefit to us, but can also cause a lot of problems in the form of cognitive bias. This just means that as human beings the way our brains function can actually bias us toward or away from certain things like steering us away from those areas that might be uncomfortable and toward familiarity. But what if you could take some of this knowledge about your brain and use it to turn potentially negative biases into an advantage. 15 years ago, the first time I really realized that you could hack your brain’s normal functions, my mind was blown, too.

The people you spend the most time with or don’t spend the most time with is often influenced by your work. So is your personal growth as a person, where you physically spend your time, and even the amount of money that you earn. For this reason, it’s incredibly important for you to understand not just what you want in your work but also what you want in every other area of your life! MOST PEOPLE THINK THAT THEY KNOW THEIR STRENGTHS… I hear them say things like “I learn fast” or “I’m good with people” but most people have not spent enough time or effort to truly understand what it is that they are great at or have the potential to be great at! Maybe these are true, but these aren’t specific enough to really be what you are great at. What is it that makes you great with people, What is it specifically that you enjoy in the interaction with others, is it even the interaction at all, or maybe something else. When I hear something as vague as “I’m good with people”, which I do in maybe 7 out of every 10 interviews with professionals, I immediately try to start digging to understand what they really actually mean. It could be that they are great at: relating to others OR communicating with people OR helping people problem solve OR building relationships quickly OR about a million other possibilities. What on earth do you really mean?

Everyone I talk to wants freedom, until they realize how it really actually works. One thing that comes up frequently while coaching people through career changes is the idea of obtaining freedom in their life and work. Freedom means different things for everyone. Sometimes it’s freedom to travel, or financial freedom, or just having the freedom and flexibility to pick up your kids from school.

As kids, we all have dreams and aspirations for what we want to do when we grow up. However, as we get older, we tend to put down our dreams to pursue “reality” - or what we perceive is reality. Those dreams we had no longer fit into what we consider realistic. Years ago when I first started Happen To Your Career, my good friend Mark and I created an 8-Day mini-course to help people begin to figure out what they really wanted to be doing for their career and their life. We’ve now had over 25,000 people go through that mini-course. One of the exercises in that course involves declaring 3 wildly unrealistic things you want to do, be or become these could be occupations, jobs, roles, whatever you wanted, Sky’s the limit. The only rule is that it has to be wildly unrealistic. We started getting thousands of responses emailed to us and there was something interesting that we noticed right away. They’re all big goals sure, but what else? None of them are actually impossible or unachievable. What does this tell us? It means that the things we believe to be wildly unrealistic are only unrealistic because we believe them to be. It’s about the story that we tell ourselves. How do people actually accomplish wildly unrealistic goals especially when you have reality standing in your way, like a full time job or obligations like kids that like to eat, or saving for their college. Or the simple fact that you have only so much energy in a single day before you pass out? Reality. We all have our current reality. This might come from obligations, parents, kids, work, serving on that board that you agreed to back before you realized how much time it was going to take, yes it’s for a good cause but maybe you didn’t actually think it would be an additional 20 hours a month. Whatever your reality is. All of us have it. The question becomes: How do you accomplish career and life goals that you might consider to be wildly unrealistic when “reality” is always pressing on us? When you set out to achieve wildly unrealistic goals you can always assume the path you follow will be the one less taken. This is, of course, also true with wildly unrealistic career changes! |

Allison and I continue to delve deeper into the things that led to her career change (and changed her entire life, too!). As she completed the Clifton’s Strengthsfinder assessment during her CCB course, Allison discovered the formula for her own career happiness. She says: confidence + strengths + motion = dream career She began to imagine a career she could be passionate about. When asked the question, “What are some of the things you can’t stop doing?” Allison found herself responding, “I can’t stop asking people if they like their job.” This answer helped her see that she was obsessed with career fulfillment. For five or six years, she had been showing interest in others’ career success. Even when she was shifting gears with her job title, she kept asking people whether or not they loved their work.
“Looking back at the big picture, even though my jobs were so different, every single job, whether it was part of the role or not—if it was just interactions with employees or how I felt about myself in that position—everything pointed to my dream job.”
Allison realized she was good at simplifying processes for people and creating new programs. She had fun communicating to people in a language they understood. When she thought about her signature strengths, she realized she could use all of these skills in helping others find fulfillment. Today, Allison is a professional career coach. She’s an entrepreneur living out her multipotentiality, and she can honestly say she’s discovered her dream career. Very few people will find career happiness in this life, whether it’s because they don’t believe it’s available to them or because they can’t identify what would even bring fulfillment, but Allison is living proof that you can do work you love and be paid well for it. |

Are you ready for a career change? We would love to talk with you about your situation and help you figure out the best path for you to follow. Allison Kolberg (Curbow) was good at everything. The problem was…she couldn’t find something she enjoyed doing. As a self-proclaimed Upholder (defined in Gretchen Rubin’s Four Tendencies), Allison had a knack, or rather a compulsion, for meeting expectations. This habit led to a “see and conquer” mentality in the career world. She’d see a job posting, and whether or not she genuinely wanted to do the work, she’d take on the challenge. In other words, she’d shift into whatever shape necessary to accomplish the goals of that role. While pursuing her degree, Allison worked as an office manager in a typical 8-hour office environment. Not too long into her role, she realized the clock-in-clock-out-pushing-papers desk job wasn’t for her. Recognizing a need for hands-on work, Allison routed her college studies for a career in oil and gas. Upon graduation, she was hired as a High-pressure Pump Operator in Anchorage, Alaska. Looking back, Allison says she was drawn to the job’s hands-on nature and the opportunity to work in big picture operations. She felt a special love for the procedures and problem-solving ability required for her two week on/two week off schedule. She was good at her job, but the love didn’t last. Allison comes on the podcast today with Scott to tell her story of how she made her transition. After she made the changes in her life to create her career change, she realized that it was more than a career change - it was a life change. On today’s episode, she explains one of the struggles she had: “I had so many different skills and interests, and I jumped around so much that one job sometimes didn't look anything like the next job. I was grasping at straws to try to fit all these aspects of my life into one [career] that I didn't even know was possible. So, I just jumped from job to job. I felt like a flip-flopper. It didn't feel very good. When I would want to move on to the next thing, I felt like I had to subdue or discredit the parts of myself that were in the other position.” By the time she got through her career transition, she was able to look back with better clarity: “Looking back at the big picture, even though my jobs were so different, every single job, whether it was part of the role or not—if it was just interactions with employees or how I felt about myself in that position—everything pointed to my dream job.” |

Is staying at a job you hate holding you back from happiness? What if you’ve changed careers…and the new work wasn’t quite the fit you thought it would be? That’s what happened to Audrey Romagnoulo. She was a talented Operations Manager working in the Events and Hospitality industry in New York City. She’d given much of herself to the job and had been rewarded with increasing responsibility, perpetual “thank yous” …and an increasing distaste for her work because what she valued most didn’t align with what the company valued. When she came to us for help, it became apparent that the genuine, highly caring, no-holds-barred person that she was (and wanted to be more often) was being hampered because of the job she was working in. In this episode, Gia tells us how she was always a girl who had a diary growing up. Nowadays, Gia got back into journaling and starts every morning writing down what she is grateful for. The other questions she writes about are what she is looking forward to and her top priorities. The most significant benefit Gia has seen with her journaling is self-awareness; having a better connection with yourself will provide clarity on what really matters in life. The last time Gia found clarity was after a year of working on a tech startup. Gia was struggling with whether she should invest more time and effort or close it and move on to something else. After journaling for a few months, she got clarity on precisely what she needed to do. Free flow journaling is another method Gia uses to get clarity on her thoughts and mindset. Writing without restraint is best for those situations when you cannot quite articulate what seems off about a particular topic. For instance, Gia is trying to move her child into the public school system; she has been free flow journaling to articulate the struggle she is having inside her head. Putting it down on paper really gets the juices flowing and allows you to make better decisions. When Gia would ask her female clients what they accomplished in their careers over the past year, they could not articulate a response. If you cannot answer how you add value to a company, most likely you will not be getting that job. Gia says women need to be able to confidently and clearly articulate how they bring value to the table. One way to start thinking about your answer is by writing down what you do every single day. After a few months, you will have more details and could clearly explain how your presence adds value. Gia tells her clients to keep tabs on the following six areas:
Once people started journaling these six things, often they would realize they were lacking in certain areas, and it would result in intentional action taking. For example, when someone realizes it has been weeks and they have done nothing to build their brand, that person would start taking actionable steps to increase their brand awareness. Some barriers that come up for Gia’s clients when journaling about their workday are procrastination and time. People always claim they do not have enough time to reflect and journal. Gia suggests opening up Google Drive and take thirty seconds to write down what you have done before you leave work for the day. Enjoy the show! Melanie, like you, identifies as a multipod. When Melanie Buford was making a college decision, she felt torn between two very different directions: On the one hand, she had a knack for math, and she felt she could excel in an engineering type role. On the other hand, Melanie felt fascinated by psychology and humanities. These two areas of interest had little to no overlap, so not only was Melanie choosing between majors but also universities. This was the first time Melanie experienced the familiar pull of the multipotentialite journey. After college, Melanie accepted a role with Americorps and moved to San Francisco, where she participated in a program called Public Allies. Working for Americorps was a combination job, as Melanie served at a nonprofit for four days per week and spent her Fridays completing Public Allies’ social justice leadership development program. Melanie and her coworkers were passionate, multifaceted people. Fast forward to now, and Melanie has become a professor of career education for the University of Cincinnati, researcher and nonfiction writer, nonprofit supporter, and science fiction writer. She enjoys helping multi-talented students discover a future that fits their unique wiring, and she loves digging into data on multipotentialites, personality tests, and strengths assessments. |

In fact, we find that much of the time we are helping our students make it easier to change to work they love by focusing on the right things, but focusing on the right things alone doesn’t automatically make you successful. A little while back, I had a Skype call with a former Google employee who made a transition into a role that fits his strengths even better. He is totally thrilled! I wanted to tell you about it because you might be thinking “who on earth chooses to leave Google? That’s the holy grail of dream jobs!” And that’s what most people think from the outside, right? But a big trap that it’s easy to fall into when you’re searching for jobs is comparing your insides to someone else’s outsides. For example, being in a job that looks like a dream job on the outside doesn’t mean it’s going to be the dream fit for YOUR inner values, strengths and interests. I can’t tell you how many people find HTYC because they’re in a job they thought would be great, but isn’t — it ends up being someone else’s dream and not their own. Or, we get emails every day about people who feel like they can’t get clarity on what their next career move looks like, so they’re stuck in a mental pressure cooker wanting to make a change forward but not knowing how. Does that sound like you? If so, grab a pen and paper because I have a ton of lessons I’ve learned from personally coaching 1,100 people through career transitions that I want to share with you to save you time, headaches, and help you make the transition you’re dreaming of happen. In today’s episode, I share 6 keys to career happiness and then how to use this information to make your change and how to focus your time to be most effective. I vividly remember being in a job that wasn’t fulfilling at all. When I was there, I didn’t understand how this whole career happiness thing worked and honestly thought that if I could just get to a better job situation then it would solve all my problems. Which means that many of us are going about the job change somewhat blindly, we’re looking at job postings online or trying to network or updating our LinkedIn profiles even spending time going on interviews but the problem is that we don’t even know exactly what a fulfilling career looks like for us. Now here’s the tricky part, we as human beings are pretty terrible at determining what will actually make us happy.

You've worked with a good team and you've had a lot of fun. It's been pretty meaningful, except … Now a lot of those things have either stopped or changed. Whether it's caused by a company merger or a new boss or a completely different situation. And that is that is where our next podcast guest found themselves. I say guest, but this is actually a bit of a different episode. We've done this once or twice before where we've shared an actual coaching session with you, allowing you to sit in as a fly on the wall, listening to somebody that we've worked with. “Most of the people I know, and coach, are recovering people-pleasers…” New York Times Best Selling Author, Michael Hyatt said this to me in our recent conversation.
In fact, I’m a recovering people-pleaser myself. In my first professional job, I working between 80-90 hours a week. Part of that was because the job was a bad fit. Part of that was because there was a huge expectation to work a ton of hours. And part of that was that I said “yes” to everything my boss asked me to do. Absolutely everything. Saying “yes” to every project - to every request. “Yes, sir, I can make that happen!” “Yes, I can get that extra presentation done.” Saying “yes” to all that took a bad situation and turned it into a totally intolerable situation.
Saying “yes” to too many things can hold you back from career happiness. At first, you may be excited that you’re the person that everyone can depend on. But then it changes. People start asking you to do more and more because “______ always finds a way to get it done.” In fact, it gets to the point that the people make you their first stop. This can cause resentment, stress, and fatigue - none of which produce career happiness. But you also find it difficult - or impossible - to stop saying “yes.”
Saying “no” is exactly what we talk about in today’s episode with Michael Hyatt. Michael is a best-selling author (multiple times over) and was previously the CEO of a publishing company before starting his own company. Michael is also a self-admitted, recovering people-pleaser. As such, throughout past few decades, he has had to learn to say “no” gracefully. In other words, he had to protect his own time and priorities. At one point, he said it this way: “The way that you can give people a really firm ‘No’ is to have a really firm ‘yes’ on the other side of it.” Also, he gives specific examples of how he can say “no” to a request, but still present a solution for the person. Years ago when I first started Happen To Your Career, my good friend Mark and I created an 8 Day mini-course to help people begin to figure out what they really wanted to be doing for their career and their life. We’ve now had over 25,000 people go through that mini-course. One of the exercises in that course involves declaring 3 wildly unrealistic things you want to do, be or become these could be occupations, jobs, roles, whatever you wanted, Sky’s the limit. The only rule is that it has to be wildly unrealistic. We started getting thousands of responses emailed to us and there was something interesting that we noticed right away. They’re all big goals sure, but what else? None of them them are actually impossible or unachievable. What does this tell us? It means that the things we believe to be wildly unrealistic are only unrealistic because we believe them to be. Sure. Feeling safe and at ease is great and all, but what goals have you ever achieved by staying in your comfort zone??
We’re willing to bet on not many at all.
Nobody ever achieves much by staying in their comfort zone.
WHY?
Well, achieving goals requires you to aim for something just a little bitout of your reach.
Having a goal makes you look forward to something attainable that may not be in your comfort zone (at the moment).
Then the question of how to get out of your comfort zone comes up.
When it comes to career change, more likely than not you’ll be faced with the choice to break out of your comfort zone to progress down a new path that may be full of unknowns. |

And, it allows you to be yourself. In order to get into this mindset though, you have to know yourself well, and respect your past experiences. You need to understand your career equity. And, that takes introspection. That introspection doesn’t come overnight either. It’s a practice that builds up over time, which is why “cramming” for interviews isn’t effective.
