Many of the people that we have worked with here at HTYC tend to go through several career changes on their own. They try many of the traditional job search methods, and they don’t see lasting results. Usually, they start excited about their new role, but then, at some point, start realizing that something is off. Sometimes the role or company doesn’t match your values. Sometimes the role doesn’t match your strengths.

Laura Parker used to work for a global law firm for 12 years, and made a change to this technology company 2 years ago. It didn’t take long for her to realize that she needed to make another change, and that’s where she found this podcast. But I’m getting ahead of her story. We need to jump back and see why she needed to leave the law firm in the first place?

How can you remove distraction?

Distraction from achieving what’s most important to you?

Distraction that takes you away from who you want to be spending your time with?

Who better to answer this question than the person who wrote "Indistractable: How to control your attention and choose your life." I read it and loved it so much that I bought it for my entire team for Christmas.

Here to teach us the difference between traction and distraction is author Nir Eyal.

As humans, we have a tendency to compare ourselves to one another. This doesn’t make us feel too great most of the time, but especially when it comes to measuring success. My measure or definition of success may not be the same as yours. And that is completely okay! That’s because success looks different for everyone. When you worry about other people’s opinions (even if it’s family or friends), it can negatively impact your potential success. On today’s episode, Celena Singh shares how she broke out of the restraints of other’s expectations and found happiness and satisfaction in her successes.

What you’ll learn

  • Why you need to figure out your own definition of success
  • How outside opinions negatively impact your success
  • What you need to do to get out of your own way
  • How to stand up for yourself and find happiness where you are

Are the expectations of others holding you back from doing work that is truly fulfilling? Most of us feel like we have to behave like one person when we’re at work, and a different person when we’re at home or in our social circles. That in itself creates a social expectation. If you want to be yourself at all times, you’re bucking the trend. Because, in our world today it’s  not “normal” to get paid to be who you are, using your true strengths instead of just the skills you’ve picked up in various roles along the way. But, you want to know the weirdest part? By resisting being your most authentic self at all times (because of fear) we are ensuring that we stay unhappy by default. Learn how to go against the grain and find a career that allows you to be YOU!

What You'll Learn

  • How to model living authentically during a career change to find a career that fits
  • How to modify your job offer to reflect what you really want
  • How your boss can support you during your career change
  • The importance of finding your strengths to determine your ideal role

  • How having patience and trusting the process can lead you to your ideal role
  • The benefits of saying “no” and how to know when the role isn’t right for you
  • How Eric used networking and persistence to make his career change

You’ve been ignoring that feeling in your gut for a while. Maybe it’s been about your job, or how you’re raising your kids, or even concerned about your relationships. But it’s time to start paying attention to it.

Why?

Your intuition is great at letting you know when things are off. But it’s not great at helping you understand why it’s off.

When Alissa Penney decided to stop ignoring those feelings, she was able to completely change her career (and even start her own consulting business).

If you’ve listened to the podcast for a while, you know one of my most common pieces of career change advice is to figure out what you WANT out of your career. But, for most of us, figuring out what we want can be difficult. We spend so much of our professional lives doing what we NEED to do, that we often lose sight of what we WANT to do. Or, we assume that if we enjoy something too much, it must not be possible to do it for a living. (Not true!) What you’ll learn

  • How to identify what you truly want from your job in order to truly find career happiness
  • Why it’s important to focus on what you want, in order to land your ideal role

Everyone has a network. And here’s a secret… Almost everyone thinks their network isn’t big or strong enough to help them land their ideal role. Not true! When you’re not in your ideal role, your job may look picture perfect from the outside, but internally you are likely struggling with what to do to find real career happiness. This can also be incredibly isolating, because it can be extremely hard to explain to others, even your loved ones, why your career is not satisfying. It’s also often hard to come to terms with the fact that it’s time for a career change, when you’ve worked hard to get to where you are and define your career. Reaching out to let someone know you’re not happy and ask for career help is the first step on the journey to finding your ideal career. Louise McNee shares the story of her reluctance to ask for help with career change, until she finally reached out to HTYC and landed a new, more fulfilling role.

What you’ll learn

  • How to overcome the natural reluctance to ask for career help in order to make a change
  • How to figure out what you truly want out of life to find your ideal role.
  • Why knowing yourself is a prerequisite to knowing what you actually want in a career.

We all have strengths and weaknesses, and as we advance through our careers, we learn to cater to our strengths and compensate for our weaknesses. But sometimes, the aspects of our personalities that we think of as weaknesses may be our greatest strengths. Growing up, Ross Loufbourrow thought of ADHD as his greatest weakness. It was only once he graduated college and began his career that he discovered ADHD wasn’t a weakness – it was a super power. Ross shares his story on this week’s podcast.

In an age of email and LinkedIn, networking has never been easier. But networking has also become a dirty word. It means bothering people for favors or having them bother you, and knowing all the time that neither of you has any interest in actually getting to know the other person. Not surprisingly, this kind of transactional networking doesn’t really work. On the podcast this week, I chat with Darrah Brustein about her approach to networking by pursuing meaningful professional relationships.

Career change means leaving an established routine for something unknown, which is scary and, let’s face it, risky. That’s why I love career experiments as a way to learn about different organizations and roles so you can try before you buy and make sure a new organization or a new role will truly be a fit before you commit to it. On this week’s episode, I chat with my HTYC colleague Lisa Lewis about the benefits of career experiments and how to design career experiments that work for you.

Over the course of our careers, as we grow, evolve, reach different stages in our lives, what once seemed like a dream job may stop feeling that way. And that’s great! Because it’s an opportunity to learn and explore who we are and what we want now, and then go get it. Kristy Wentz worked in PR for 20 years. And she loved it, until she didn’t. When she finally decided to move on, she created her own role that combined her favorite parts of PR… plus travelling and tasting wine. Not bad, right?

Fear of disappointing others can be a powerful barrier to pursuing your ideal role. But, you want to know the weirdest part? By resisting being your most authentic self at all times (because of fear) we are ensuring that we stay unhappy by default. • How to modify your job offer to reflect what you really want

We’ll also explore the 3 things Vicky did to prepare herself for some of her weakest moments (including turning down a good opportunity to continue looking for an ideal opportunity).

You’ve seen those quotes on instagram, facebook or linkedin about changing the world. They’re cliche. “You can change the world if you care enough.” Or “want to change the world, start by making your bed” or “Be the change you want to see in the world.”

I personally don’t think so. I also don’t think Harriet Tubman became the Harriet Tubman you’ve heard of overnight.

Today we unravel what it takes to have a unique contribution and impact in the world. And to discover what it means for you to change the world.

This year we decided we’d do something different, we decided we’d let you in on part of that conversation. Specifically the parts about what went well and what we want to do differently.

Possibly the most difficult part of finding opportunities that fit you, is locating organizations that are a perfect match for you. After all, there really isn’t a list out there of companies that are small family-style organizations that happen to allow highly flexible schedules and also have large amounts of resources and a leadership team hell-bent on integrity.

Those organizations are out there, for sure, but the question is: “How do you find this unicorn organization?”

But it’s even more complicated than that, because what is a perfect fit for one person, isn't necessarily right for you.

In this episode, we break down 3 specific steps to locating organizations that fit, complete with examples of actual coaching sessions with our clients.

One of the big things that we talk and teach about is strengths. Specifically, we help people identify their Signature Strengths.

There are a lot of people that seem to minimize the importance of identifying and understanding their strengths, but it really is one of the most important pieces to find or create your ideal career.

Today, we’re sharing a conversation with Kirby Verceles.

Kirby has been through several career transitions, but it made a huge difference in her life and in her career once she identified her Signature Strengths. The work she does now is meaningful and fits her strengths.

On Monday, I shared our podcast episode about how career change really works and showed you .

And I mentioned a 13-step process to make a successful career change.

Today, we get into what is the step-by-step process.

Now, I say process a little bit liberally, because, in reality, this is a very squiggly line type event.

It's forwards and backwards, and up and down, and all over in order to get to work that matters to you - work that's much more meaningful, more fulfilling, just better for you - all the way around work that fits.

At the same time, still, there are pieces that everyone goes through to be able to get there. It rarely happens by accident.

So, I want you to know what the exact steps are that we use with every single person behind the scenes, but also that people that we're not even helping go through as well.

Here are the 13 steps to a successful career change:

  1. What’s your goal?
  2. Assess strengths, experience, and assets
  3. Assess what you’d like to keep (address issue of not having to start over)
  4. Assess what’s missing in your career
  5. Create Ideal Career Profile
  6. Design a Career Test Drive to prove that’s the right direction for you
  7. Develop a job search plan (terrible name - need to come up with something better)
  8. Develop target list of Companies/Roles or both
  9. Begin your search/build relationships (networking! yay!)
  10. Interview like a badass
  11. Negotiate your offers
  12. Accept your offer and happy dance
  13. Scrap all your training and join the dark side

I go into detail on each of these steps on the podcast episode today.
