One of the greatest assets that you can have in pursuing a career change is a support network of people who understand why career change is so important to you, and why you need their help to get through it. But creating this network may require some uncomfortable conversations. Career change means leaving an established routine for something unknown, which is scary and, let’s face it, risky. That’s why I love career experiments as a way to learn about different organizations and roles so you can try before you buy and make sure a new organization or a new role will truly be a fit before you commit to it. Over the course of our careers, as we grow, evolve, reach different stages in our lives, what once seemed like a dream job may stop feeling that way. And that’s great! Because it’s an opportunity to learn and explore who we are and what we want now, and then go get it. Kristy Wentz worked in PR for 20 years. And she loved it, until she didn’t. Fear of disappointing others can be a powerful barrier to pursuing your ideal role. In our world today it’s not “normal” to get paid to be who you are, using your true strengths instead of just the skills you’ve picked up in various roles along the way. But, you want to know the weirdest part? By resisting being your most authentic self at all times (because of fear) we are ensuring that we stay unhappy by default. Jenny hated her job, but was afraid to look for a new role for fear of letting other people down, taking a step back in her career and losing the benefit of her education.
