It’s easy to get overwhelmed or fall into the traditional rut of browsing job boards, applying for everything, and hoping it all works out.

The top lessons we’ve learned from thousands of career changes have revealed tons of insights and a better way to do things.

In this episode, we cover why it pays to take the road less traveled, how to never feel lost or alone during the process, and why you don’t always need to start over to create a change.

  • The “horrific” experience that inspired Scott’s own search for well-paying work that fit his skills (and ultimately starting Happen To Your Career and one of the top career podcasts in the country)
  • Turning casual coffee convos into a career change movement Scott shares incredible examples of what’s possible with raises and role changes (and how others picking his brain over coffee kick-started the entrepreneurial “itch”)
  • The #1 oversight people have that keeps them unsatisfied with the work they do and money they earn (and how to approach changing that without starting over)
  • Scott’s most valuable piece of advice for folks who feel their work is lacking meaning (plus what he’s learned from helping thousands overcome this)
  • Not sure where feeling unsatisfied with work is really coming from? Scott shares the science-based difference between “inward happiness” focus areas and outward “happiness enablers”
  • What “Signature Strengths” are (and why they’re a critical part of achieving career happiness)

You’ve seen those quotes on instagram, facebook or linkedin about changing the world. They’re cliche. “You can change the world if you care enough.” Or “want to change the world, start by making your bed” or “Be the change you want to see in the world.”

But how does somebody actually change the world? Do you need to be Harriet Tubman or Mother Teresa?

I personally don’t think so. I also don’t think Harriet Tubman became the Harriet Tubman you’ve heard of overnight.

Today we unravel what it takes to have a unique contribution and impact in the world. And to discover what it means for you to change the world.

Every single year Alyssa and I sit down to set our goals for the year. It’s something that I’ve grown to look forward to every year. It’s the time where we’re being intentional about what our next year is going to look like!

Usually we sit down sometime in November to take a first pass at it and decide what we want to do more of and what we want less of in our life!

This year we decided we’d do something different, we decided we’d let you in on part of that conversation. Specifically the parts about what went well and what we want to do differently.

Possibly the most difficult part of finding opportunities that fit you, is locating organizations that are a perfect match for you. After all, there really isn’t a list out there of companies that are small family-style organizations that happen to allow highly flexible schedules and also have large amounts of resources and a leadership team hell-bent on integrity.

Those organizations are out there, for sure, but the question is: “How do you find this unicorn organization?”

But it’s even more complicated than that, because what is a perfect fit for one person, isn't necessarily right for you.

In this episode, we break down 3 specific steps to locating organizations that fit, complete with examples of actual coaching sessions with our clients.

One of the big things that we talk and teach about is strengths. Specifically, we help people identify their Signature Strengths.

There are a lot of people that seem to minimize the importance of identifying and understanding their strengths, but it really is one of the most important pieces to find or create your ideal career.

Today, we’re sharing a conversation with Kirby Verceles.

Kirby has been through several career transitions, but it made a huge difference in her life and in her career once she identified her Signature Strengths. The work she does now is meaningful and fits her strengths.

On Monday, I shared our podcast episode about how career change really works and showed you .

And I mentioned a 13-step process to make a successful career change.

Today, we get into what is the step-by-step process.

Now, I say process a little bit liberally, because, in reality, this is a very squiggly line type event.

It's forwards and backwards, and up and down, and all over in order to get to work that matters to you - work that's much more meaningful, more fulfilling, just better for you - all the way around work that fits.

At the same time, still, there are pieces that everyone goes through to be able to get there. It rarely happens by accident.

So, I want you to know what the exact steps are that we use with every single person behind the scenes, but also that people that we're not even helping go through as well.

Here are the 13 steps to a successful career change:

  1. What’s your goal?
  2. Assess strengths, experience, and assets
  3. Assess what you’d like to keep (address issue of not having to start over)
  4. Assess what’s missing in your career
  5. Create Ideal Career Profile
  6. Design a Career Test Drive to prove that’s the right direction for you
  7. Develop a job search plan (terrible name - need to come up with something better)
  8. Develop target list of Companies/Roles or both
  9. Begin your search/build relationships (networking! yay!)
  10. Interview like a badass
  11. Negotiate your offers
  12. Accept your offer and happy dance
  13. Scrap all your training and join the dark side

I go into detail on each of these steps on the podcast episode today.

But it’s far from “too much to ask.” This is the first of a 2-episode series to show you how people actually make these types of career changes. We break down this “unicorn” into a step-by-step guide.

What you’ll learn

  • The 13 steps to a successful career change
  • How to find your strengths and use them to find work you love
  • How to assess what’s missing in your career

Figuring out what you really want in your career and in life is one of the most important keys to happiness and fulfillment.

It’s so important that it’s one of the first things that we address as we work with our clients.

The problem, though, is that many people haven’t actually identified what they really want.

Almost everyone knows what they don’t want, but that doesn’t lead to happiness.

Today, you’ll hear:

  • How to find what you love to do again (if you’ve strayed away from it)
  • Why you need to identify true strengths and values that lead to your ideal role
  • How you can prepare yourself to finally make the jump to your next career move
  • What kind of jobs/positions/roles a project manager can move into

Scott addresses all of these today as we share a training we did a couple weeks ago.

Some people can just keep going forever in a job that they no longer find meaningful, but for many people there’s an expiration date when it’s painful to keep going to work, sitting at your desk and knowing that you’re just not that excited about it. But how do you know if you should simply quit your job? Will that be the right move. Aside from the financial aspect, there are many other reasons that this could be the best (or worst decision) of your life.

In this episode with Mike Goodman, we evaluate his journey to decide whether quitting (without a new job yet) was right for him. More importantly, you’ll learn 4 questions to ask yourself to know if it makes sense for you to quit (without having another opportunity)

As high performers contemplate making a career change, one of their concerns is with their salary. They believe that if they were to switch careers to something that they actually enjoy that they have to take a pay cut. In reality, what we have seen with the people we work with is that is almost never the case. In fact, there are many times when they get an increase in their salary.

Today, we’re sharing a training we did talking about this very subject:

How to Transfer Your Skills So You Can Keep Your Same Salary

Some of the specific things that you’ll learn in this episode are:

  • How to transfer your skills into a different industry
  • How to connect the dots for inexperienced recruiters and hiring managers
  • How to approach a career change in a new field
  • How to determine what your next job should even be
  • How to handle gaps in employment history

On Monday, I shared a conversation I had with Anne Converse Willkomm, Department Head of Graduate Studies and Assistant Clinical Professor at Drexel University’s Goodwin College of Professional Studies.

We talked about when it was right for you to go back to school.

While going back to college isn’t right for everyone, for those that it is right for now face another question:

“I know going back to school is the right choice for me, but how do I pick the right place/program?”

This can seem very daunting since there are hundreds or even thousands of choices out there.

So as Anne and I got to this part of the conversation on Monday, I knew we had to bring her back to talk about choosing the right college.

As you scan through the possibilities of programs that you could enroll in, you can probably cut out several ones easily (based on things like physical location, availability of online courses, and cost). But you’re still left with at least a handful of options.

As you look into each program, you likely do most of your research online - reading through the pages websites. You may reach out and contact someone at the university.

Being a Department Head, Anne shares that most applicants actually talk to the wrong people when applying, and they don’t ask the right questions.

People usually contact someone in admissions, but the best person to talk to is the director of the program you’re looking into - they will provide the best answers. Admissions can’t get deep enough into giving you the answers to the questions you should be asking, like:

  • Can the program advance my career in ___?
  • How will the courses build my skills/knowledge?
  • What are the students in the program like?
  • Is the school going to be there for me after graduation?

You’ll also hear:

  • What happens when you change your mind while you’re already in school
  • How you can be proactive before you get in this situation
  • How you can know if a college/university is open to making a mid-college change (not all are)

So, if you if going back to school is the right choice for you, this episode is perfect for you.

When it comes to making a career change, almost everyone we talk to has considered going back to school. On top of a full time job and possibly a family at home, the thought of going back to school makes a majority of those people cringe. Anne Converse Willkomm is a program director at Goodwin College of Professional Studies at Drexel University. She and I discuss whether going back to school will or won’t aid in your career growth. This entire episode is to answer the question, “When is it right to go back to school?”

What you’ll learn

  • When it’s necessary to go back to school to advance your career
  • Why all masters degrees are not created equal, and the specific differences to look for
  • How to create a “master resume” (which we teach in Career Change Bootcamp!)

What’s the thing that very few people are asking right now that almost everyone is missing?

Instead of saying “should I be looking right now,” what if you flipped it on it’s head and said:

“How do I take this opportunity  where very few people are taking action on their job search and use this time to make a leap into something bigger?”

That’s a question that’s worth some serious consideration.

This is also one of the questions that Scott dives into with Eleanor on the podcast today.

I want to invite you to join us for another live webinar-style training, where Scott is going to answer your questions again. We’re going to try to bring 1 or 2 people on live, like we did with Diane and Eleanor. To sign up for the next training, go to happentoyourcareer.com/webinar-weekly. After you register to attend, you’ll be able to submit your question. Even if you can’t attend live, you can still submit your question.

By the way, we have temporarily re-opened Career Change Bootcamp in light of everything going on with the virus and quarantine situations. We don’t usually re-open CCB so soon after closing, but these are unusual times, and we want to provide you with the best help we can. If you’re interested in CCB, send Scott an email, scott@happentoyourcareer.com, with “CCB Conversation” in the subject line, and he’ll connect you with our team to figure out the very best way that we can help you.

Everyone bases their identity on something. Some base it on their role as a spouse, parent, child, or other relationship. Many people base their identity on what they do for a living.

But then, something happens to change your role or relationship, and it causes confusion about your identity.

Dave Stachowiak joins us to talk about why basing your identity on what you do can actually get in the way of identifying what you REALLY want to do in the world.

There have been events throughout history that have impacted the world as a whole. While we still haven’t seen the full effect of the Covid-19 pandemic, it has definitely made some changes for people across the globe.

These changes have put us into a “new normal,” and many people have been wondering how to move forward.

How do I know this? It’s because we have received hundreds of questions over the past few weeks.

We’ve been hosting special webinars to answer the most common questions that we’re getting (you’ve probably seen the invites to these - in fact, you may have even attended one or more of these).

Well, we held one of these webinars on March 23. Since most people couldn’t attend the webinar (and we wanted to share these answers with you), we’re airing the main part of the webinar on the podcast.

We answered 4 specific questions that people have asked:

  1. Having currently a job at a financially stable nonprofit, should I consider a professional move during pandemic time?
  2. How do I tell my current boss that I am leaving during these difficult times (Covid-19)?
  3. How do we know if we should go for interviews or accept an offer since it seems risky to change jobs now since companies are negatively affected by the Covid-19 situation?
  4. How do I know what new career I’d enjoy and be good at when I only have the experience from by current career as a reference point?

They try many of the traditional job search methods, and they don’t see lasting results. Usually, they start excited about their new role, but then, at some point, start realizing that something is off. Sometimes the role or company doesn’t match your values. Sometimes the role doesn’t match your strengths.

Laura Parker used to work for a global law firm for 12 years, and made a change to this technology company 2 years ago. It didn’t take long for her to realize that she needed to make another change, and that’s where she found this podcast. But I’m getting ahead of her story. We need to jump back and see why she needed to leave the law firm in the first place?

Laura has gone through our Career Change Bootcamp, and, right now, we are accepting applications for the next group for CCB. Companies are still hiring and our proven career change framework still applies today, even during these unusual and uncertain times. Over the past couple weeks, we have been talking with a lot of people and answering a lot of questions specifically about the current state of affairs. So, if you want to take the first step to make your change, send me an email, scott@happentoyourcareer.com, with “CCB Conversation” in the subject line. I’ll connect you with Phillip, our Director of Client Success, and he’ll help find the very best way we can help you.

We all hit brick walls along our career journey. The problem is that many people let that stop them.

There are some things that we can do to get around (or get over) these obstacles.

We actually recorded this episode in front of a live audience. A few of the questions we answer:

  • How does COVID19 affect my career change (the answers here will surprise you)
  • How do I showcase my experience and success in the most effective way?
  • How do I communicate my desire for new opportunity within my organization?
  • How can I reconcile emotionally from leaving former role with a new role?

I have been studying high achievers for years, and today I am doing a deep dive on one subset of high achievers: Billionaires. How did they get started? What actions did they take to get where they are? What mindset shifts did they have to go through? (because they do think much differently than most of the world). I am joined by top performer, James Altucher, who is an American hedge-fund manager & author. He shares the insights that he has learned studying billionaires.

What you’ll learn

  • Why “being different” is so much better than “being better”
  • Ways billionaires think differently than the rest of the world
  • How to “edit your life” so you can make a huge impact on your career and life.

There is something - or maybe several somethings - coming between you and your dream.

Maybe you don’t know exactly what it is right now, and that’s OK. I’ve been there. I’ve worked with hundreds of people that have been there as well. And we have been able to break our dreams down into much smaller steps, and identify what that very first baby step looks like.

But, I’m getting ahead of myself.

This episode today features an interview we had on the podcast seven years ago, and it was actually my co-host back then, Mark,  that conducted the interview. Throughout the interview, you’re going to find out how you can break down your dreams into smaller steps and get over what holds you back from reaching your dream.

So, let’s get into this interview between Mark and our guest, Richie Norton.

“I am a former educator. So I have a background in early childhood education. And my views changed slightly after I had children and started raising them and started looking at careers and world life experiences differently.”

Even though most of us aren’t former educators, I’m sure most of us parents have a similar experience when we have children and begin raising them.

The above quote came from my wife, Alyssa. She joins me on the podcast this week as we talk about how to prepare children for their future careers.

Since we have a company that focuses on helping people with their careers, we have all the answers and are preparing our kids perfectly.

Maybe that’s a little of an exaggeration.

We don't do it perfectly. But we do have a pretty significant head start because, every single day, we get to see people many, many years later and what's worked out for them, and what hasn't worked out for them.

There are a lot of resources that help people prepare their kids for college, but that’s a limited approach.

We need to prepare our kids to be ready after college.

Listen to the podcast today to help you work with your kids and prepare them for their future careers.

We have done well over 300 episodes over the past 7 years. I have had a shared a lot of fantastic conversations right here on the podcast to help you create your own career happiness. One problem with having over 300 episodes, is that some episodes tend to get buried.

Today, I’d like to dig up one of those great conversations I had 7 years ago - it was actually the 3rd episode we ever released. When we originally talked she has written 1 book, but now she has written 3 more books. Her latest book is called, “The Serving Mindset: Stop Selling and Grow Your Business.” She is passionate about showing people how to define your their freedom in first their health and then their career, and she has doing this through her site ProlificLiving.com.

So here’s my conversation with Farnoosh Brock.

Robert was in a VP level role, earning great money and enjoying life and work. He was well known around his industry. He was great at what he did.

Things were pretty good overall… Until they weren’t!

Robert got laid off. No big deal right. A great opportunity to take some time and get a way. (Thanks soft landings and severance!)

Except when it came time to go back to work: 8 months passed. Then 10, 12… 18 months passed and he’d had a few interviews but nothing had panned out.

He and his partner were pulling their hair out a bit trying to figure out what was going on. He’s a smart guy, he gets results, why wasn’t this working?

They had been through everything, was it his interview style? Simply unlucky? Was he coming off as desperate?

That’s where I had the opportunity to meet Robert. As he was trying to figure out what was working and what wasn’t.

It turns out Robert’s answer wasn’t what you’d think it would be.

The cost for staying in your job is higher than you think, and Audrey learned that the hard way.

She was a talented Operations Manager working in the Events and Hospitality industry in New York City. She’d given much of herself to the job and had been rewarded with increasing responsibility, perpetual “thank yous” …and an increasing distaste for her work because what she valued most didn’t align with what the company valued.

When she came to us for help, it became apparent that the genuine, highly caring, no-holds-barred person that she was (and wanted to be more often) was being hampered because of the job she was working in.

This inability to be herself for 70 hours a week became so frustrating for her that it sparked an 11-month long journey to figure out what she really wanted and fight off the mental barriers that were keeping her stuck!

So how did she go from teary days staying at a job she hated to getting paid $20,000 more with a career that allowed her to be who she is?

Take a listen to Audrey’s story and find out!

Many people that think their dream is impossible.

Sharissa Sebastian had been in the tech industry for years, but was wanting to make a transition out of that field.

She was eventually introduced to coaching through Groupon.

Her coach began talking with her about what her ideal situation would look like, but she was holding herself back. She didn't think that "ideal" wouldn't be realistic.

But Sharissa's coach asked her, "But what if it is possible?"

“I felt like there was something missing in my career that I had some skills I wanted to sharpen that I wanted a different connection to the work that I was doing. And I was feeling very stuck in my search.” - Rebecca

“It literally made me sick, the anxiety, the stress that I was under.”- Jerrad

At Happen To Your Career, we hear this kind of thing all the time. High Performers work hard to get an education and build their careers. But then they find themselves in a place of unhappiness.

I want to share several examples of people that we have worked with that came from being stuck and unclear.

I’m sharing snippets of success stories today to show you that it really is possible to radically change your life. The “normal” ways that people approach career change don’t really work. At least, they don’t work reliably. So I wouldn’t recommend gambling on your life and your future.

At Happen To Your Career, we have helped hundreds of people 1-on-1 make career changes. Some of that help has been through our Career Change Bootcamp program, but we have also helped a lot of people at an even higher level through our Signature Coaching.

Check out the Signature Coaching Program now and see if it's a fit for you!

You can also be one of the first to schedule a call with us to talk about this with you 1-on-1!

Here at Happen To Your Career we often create episodes based on questions we get from our audience. However there’s one question I never ever get.

How can I remove distraction?

Distraction from achieving what’s most important to me?

Distraction that takes me away from who I want to be spending my time with?

And yet that’s what stops so many of us from what we really want to accomplish.

Who better to answer this question than the person who wrote "Indistractable: How to control your attention and choose your life." I read it and loved it so much that I bought it for my entire team for Christmas.

Here to teach us the difference between traction and distraction is author Nir Eyal.

This is actually a crossover episode from our other podcast, How to Become a Career Coach.

****

"How do you determine what to charge for coaching?"

"Should I do one-on-one coaching or group coaching?"

"What if my target market can't afford my rates? Do I go broke, or do I just lose out on clients?" (and they don't get the help they need)

These are common questions that new coaches often ask. In fact, these are questions that all coaches face when they hit a plateau or brick wall in finding new clients.

While it's important to address these issues, realize that there is not just a single answer.

You will probably be looking for an 'AND' solution.

Listen to hear how Jennifer found a way to help her target market (also create additional benefits for clients), make it affordable for their financial situation, AND also provided the income she needed for herself.

Many times people realize that they are not where they should be, doing what they should be doing, but they’re afraid to make a change. They’re afraid of what negative consequences may happen if they make a change. Maybe they make up excuses like:

  • “I can’t quit my job now, I’ve already put in 10 years.”
  • “I only have 5 years until I get to retire.”
  • “I have to make sure to take care of my family, so it’s not the right time.”
  • “What if my boss finds out I’m looking for another job - I’d get fired!”

And I totally get these. It can be scary when you face the unknown.

But, on the other hand, what if the change was actually going to improve your situation - not make it worse? As I’ve worked with thousands of people making career changes, getting over this hurdle is one of the best things that has happened in their lives. They’ve been able to find the work that really fits them. In many cases, they’ve been able to negotiate better salaries and benefits. They’ve been able to spend more quality time with their families.

Our guest today was actually a podcast listener for a long time, and then we had the opportunity to work with her on her recent career change. Moving from Eastern Europe to the UK, Karolina began working as an accountant. Everything was great...for six years.

Heather felt stalled out in her career and life, and knew she needed to make a change before she completely burned out.

After taking deliberate action and getting some help, she now has a fulfilling career that really fits her.

Whoever said that hard work and perseverance doesn’t pay off sure didn’t meet Tanya.

What Tanya Malcolm Revell did when she was looking to make her big career change was no easy feat.

Besides being an American looking for work that fit her in London, Tanya is also a Career Change Bootcamp alum and our guest for this installment of our most recent CCB success story.

After experiencing the overwhelm of career burnout from her previous positions and frustration with the job search overseas, Tanya found HTYC, enrolled in Bootcamp, put in the hard work, built strategic relationships, and persevered even after some unanswered phone calls and emails to land her dream job.

Curious how she did it? (and how you can do it, too?)

Check out:
- The steps in the CCB process that will properly position you during your career transition
- The unexpected benefits of putting yourself out there and networking
- How looking at the positive, rather than getting stuck on the negative, is instrumental in helping you keep perspective on your career goals

When we look at career change, we know that taking on this big life change requires a great amount of time, energy, maybe a bit of financial planning, and a solid support system to lean on when the career change process becomes overwhelming.

One of the least-talked about topics of career change is your current and ongoing support system.

Everyone needs a support system as they approach any big life changes.

As much as our core supporters want to be there for us as we make this career change, many of them aren’t really sure how to approach the issue.
