We all have strengths and weaknesses, and as we advance through our careers, we learn to cater to our strengths and compensate for our weaknesses. But sometimes, the aspects of our personalities that we think of as weaknesses may be our greatest strengths. Growing up, Ross Loufbourrow thought of ADHD as his greatest weakness. It was only once he graduated college and began his career that he discovered ADHD wasn’t a weakness – it was a super power. Ross shares his story on this week’s podcast.

In an age of email and LinkedIn, networking has never been easier. But networking has also become a dirty word. It means bothering people for favors or having them bother you, and knowing all the time that neither of you has any interest in actually getting to know the other person. Not surprisingly, this kind of transactional networking doesn’t really work. On the podcast this week, I chat with Darrah Brustein about her approach to networking by pursuing meaningful professional relationships.

One of the greatest assets that you can have in pursuing a career change is a support network of people who understand why career change is so important to you, and why you need their help to get through it. But creating this network may require some uncomfortable conversations. On the podcast this week, I chat with my former client Rebecca Maddox about how she built her support network, and the role that it played in her career change experience.

Career change means leaving an established routine for something unknown, which is scary and, let’s face it, risky. That’s why I love career experiments as a way to learn about different organizations and roles so you can try before you buy and make sure a new organization or a new role will truly be a fit before you commit to it. On this week’s episode, I chat with my HTYC colleague Lisa Lewis about the benefits of career experiments and how to design career experiments that work for you.

Over the course of our careers, as we grow, evolve, reach different stages in our lives, what once seemed like a dream job may stop feeling that way. And that’s great! Because it’s an opportunity to learn and explore who we are and what we want now, and then go get it. Kristy Wentz worked in PR for 20 years. And she loved it, until she didn’t. When she finally decided to move on, she created her own role that combined her favorite parts of PR… plus travelling and tasting wine. Not bad, right?

Alissa knew she had to make a change when she could no longer see anything.

Not in a metaphorical sense. Nope. The doctor had confirmed that her periods of temporary blindness were work-stress induced. And as it turns out, Alissa was unwilling to give up her eyesight for her job!

Alissa’s career began in Human Resources. She worked her way up to Director Level HR roles in municipalities! That’s where she started experiencing stress like she’d never experienced before.

She also knew that there had to be a different way to do work! A way that fit her. That’s when she began thinking about opening her own consulting business!

What You’ll Learn

  • What worked (and didn’t work) as Alissa started her consulting business
  • Why she started thinking about consulting as career in the first place!
  • How she went from temporary blindness to much more fulfilling work (and what were the hardest parts along the way!)

Wondering how to use the Clifton StrengthsFinder Assessment? Is it accurate, Will it tell me what type of career I should focus on? How do I use it outside of my work?

All good questions: We thought it would be better to show you how people can use strengths, what they are, how they work, even how to incorporate them into things like interviews. We also thought it would be best if we showed you this real time.

Laura spent nearly a decade in a career that didn’t fit her.

She figured being good at math and in a family of engineers meant she’d enjoy the field, too. But as the years went on, the work never felt right.

“I had to hide the part of myself that wasn’t engaged and super passionate anymore. I would put on this extroverted fake smile at work and come home and be unhappy,” she notes.

Tune in to today’s episode to learn how Laura regained her confidence and landed her dream job while staying true to herself.

Dan Pink — NY Times Bestselling author of books like Drive and When — went from being a speechwriter for Al Gore to one of the world’s leading voices on the science of career happiness.

I sat down with Dan to figure out how to be okay with un-passion, why WHEN we work matters, and what really leads to career happiness.

That’s because he literally wrote the book (Drive) about the science of what motivates us as people. And he found some interesting stuff:

  • Like how we’re more driven by making a contribution to something than we are to live in our passions
  • How passion really is an unsustainable feeling - it’s an intense emotion that can only be held for so long
  • What science shows about when you do your best work

So, if you’ve been pursuing your passion but have come up short, tune in to this episode to discover a new path.

Michael had been an executive at Sony entertainment for many years. It was a great career for him.

Until it wasn’t.

The absolutely crazy thing is that in all his years working for Sony, even though he enjoyed lots of pieces of it, he’d never realized that work could be something that was fun.

He was able to get unstuck and find a new career path that did fit him.

As I talked with Michael, it was evident how much life had changed for him in the last two years.

My question is why not both?

Alyson faced a big challenge as she navigated a career change.

She did all the work to identify what she really wanted in her life and a career, but as Alyson started to search for open positions, she realized that what she was looking for didn’t always match up with what companies said they were looking for.

Most people don’t make a career change because they’re worried about what they might lose by making a change. Listen to this conversation to hear how Alyson avoided that problem entirely!

Doubts are normal when you’re making a big decision - it’s just a matter of how you handle those doubts.

On January 2nd 2020, Vicky Meng sent an email that changed her life.

On the podcast today, Vicky does a great job of articulating these high and low points throughout her transition. You’ll understand what it’s really like to make this type of career change. It’s so much harder than everyone thinks it will be, but I’ve yet to meet anyone who believes it wasn’t absolutely worth it.
