People tend to devote a lot of their time and energy to figuring out what their passion is. We've worked with a lot of people that had a career they were passionate about, but they discovered that passion wasn’t really the key to career happiness.

Many people seem to get lucky in life - they get the best jobs, the best houses, the best cars.

That’s because the science of happiness works whether you are intentional or not.

To get the best results, though, you must be intentional in your actions surrounding your life and career.

Jenn Lim shares how she learned to identify what was really important to her after she was laid off from her job and her dad was diagnosed with cancer. She learned how to be intentional and use science to create her own luck.

Ninety-five percent of times people approach career change with limiting beliefs. Sometimes the career you’re working in for nearly a decade or more, doesn’t line up with your true calling and you feel as if you’ve wasted time, so now you want to do a career pivot.

But instead of asking ourselves, “what career fits me and how can I get it?” We ask ourselves the wrong questions first, such as “how am I going to transition to a new career when I have no experience in that career?”

The result? More time wasted fearing the unknown and possibly giving up hope before starting.

In this HTYC episode, Scott Anthony Barlow sits down with his guest, Cesar, who had several roadblocks, mental barriers and limiting beliefs that he had to overcome before starting his career change journey and he’ll share how he was able to achieve career growth and career happiness from successfully switching industries from legal to nonprofit.

Many people tend to make the mistake that “signature strengths'' means the same thing as strengths. They may look similar but their definitions - not so much.

What if I told you that getting hired for your strengths may still lead to career unhappiness and feeling stuck, like you’re back at square one? It’s true. Sociologists have presented hard science behind the concept that what really leads to career happiness is getting hired for your signature strengths.

In this HTYC episode, Scott Anthony Barlow dives into the concept of signature strengths and why it’s less obvious and much harder to identify when compared to “strengths” due to the emotion component. We’ll also explore why it’s so much more useful to utilize signature strengths when doing a career change and finding an ideal role that fits you.

If you’ve listened to the podcast for a while, you know one of my most common pieces of career change advice is to figure out what you WANT out of your career. But, for most of us, figuring out what we want can be difficult. We spend so much of our professional lives doing what we NEED to do, that we often lose sight of what we WANT to do. Or, we assume that if we enjoy something too much, it must not be possible to do it for a living. (Not true!) Learn how Chris combined his love of cars and hobby of helping people search for vehicles into a new career path.

What you’ll learn

  • How to identify what you truly want from your job in order to truly find career happiness
  • Why it’s important to focus on what you want, in order to land your ideal role
  • How to change your mindset on “work” and turn a hobby into a career that you love

Everyone has a network. And here’s a secret… Almost everyone thinks their network isn’t big or strong enough to help them land their ideal role. Not true! Studies have shown that it’s not the people closest to us who are the really powerful part of our network,it’s the “weak ties” (the friends of friends) who truly matter for making things happen. Surprised? Confused? On this week’s podcast, Scott chats with Tanya Malcolm Revell who used the friends of friends in her network to land her ideal role.

What You’ll Learn

  • Why your network should be tapped into to unlock your ideal role.
  • How to identify your weak ties and discover the power of those acquaintances
  • How to maximize your network to get your ideal role.

Society’s definition of success is usually being an executive at your company, living in a penthouse, having a loaded bank account and traveling the world in a private jet. Right?

But often, that means getting a job that other people regard as important or prestigious…even if the job actually makes us miserable. So what’s your own definition of success? For some it’s avoiding corporate burnout, feeling career happiness, spending more time with family, or just being in an organization that actually cares about their career growth.

In this HTYC episode, Scott Anthony Barlow chats with Jackie Yerby as we look into how she was able to not only find her ideal role in public policy, but also avoid society’s definition of success along the way to craft, own and happily live her own definition, her way.

When you’re not in your ideal role, your job may look picture perfect from the outside, but internally you are likely struggling with what to do to find real career happiness. This can also be incredibly isolating, because it can be extremely hard to explain to others, even your loved ones, why your career is not satisfying. It’s also often hard to come to terms with the fact that it’s time for a career change, when you’ve worked hard to get to where you are and define your career. Reaching out to let someone know you’re not happy and ask for career help is the first step on the journey to finding your ideal career. Louise McNee shares the story of her reluctance to ask for help with career change, until she finally reached out to HTYC and landed a new, more fulfilling role.

What you’ll learn

  • How to overcome the natural reluctance to ask for career help in order to make a change
  • How to figure out what you truly want out of life to find your ideal role.
  • Why knowing yourself is a prerequisite to knowing what you actually want in a career.

Traditional job searching doesn’t work. You decide you want a career change so you start searching for titles you think you would enjoy, but in the end you are trying to squeeze yourself into the box of the few roles you see on job boards. If you do find a role that aligns with what you believe you want out of your career, and you land it, you usually start out excited about your new role… but eventually realize something is off. Many times the role does not cater to your strengths or the company doesn't align with your values. Laura Parker shares her story of what happened when she completed a career change, and almost immediately realized that she was still unhappy in her role.

What You'll Learn

  • How Laura knew she needed a career change in the first place
  • The best way to go about leaving a company soon after you’ve been hired
  • How Laura figured out what she needed to do next in order to be happy in her career.

We all have strengths and weaknesses, and as we advance through our careers, we learn to cater to our strengths and compensate for our weaknesses. But sometimes, the aspects of our personalities that we think of as weaknesses may be our greatest strengths. Growing up, Ross Loufbourrow thought of ADHD as his greatest weakness. It was only once he graduated college and began his career that he discovered ADHD wasn’t a weakness – it was a super power. Ross shares his story on this week’s podcast.

In an age of email and LinkedIn, networking has never been easier. But networking has also become a dirty word. It means bothering people for favors or having them bother you, and knowing all the time that neither of you has any interest in actually getting to know the other person. Not surprisingly, this kind of transactional networking doesn’t really work. On the podcast this week, I chat with Darrah Brustein about her approach to networking by pursuing meaningful professional relationships.

One of the greatest assets that you can have in pursuing a career change is a support network of people who understand why career change is so important to you, and why you need their help to get through it. But creating this network may require some uncomfortable conversations. Career change means leaving an established routine for something unknown, which is scary and, let’s face it, risky. That’s why I love career experiments as a way to learn about different organizations and roles so you can try before you buy and make sure a new organization or a new role will truly be a fit before you commit to it. On this week’s episode, I chat with my HTYC colleague Lisa Lewis about the benefits of career experiments and how to design career experiments that work for you.

Over the course of our careers, as we grow, evolve, reach different stages in our lives, what once seemed like a dream job may stop feeling that way. And that’s great! Because it’s an opportunity to learn and explore who we are and what we want now, and then go get it. Kristy Wentz worked in PR for 20 years. And she loved it, until she didn’t. When she finally decided to move on, she created her own role that combined her favorite parts of PR… plus travelling and tasting wine. Not bad, right?

  • How to modify your job offer to reflect what you really want

Usually when we ask ourselves, “Should I Quit My Job?” It’s a question that we rarely ever say “yes” to without quickly defaulting to saying “no”, most times due to the creeping fear of failing or for financial reasons (family, mortgage, student loans, etc).

Even worse, the odds of you starting your career search and successfully finding your ideal role without first knowing yourself and what you love and enjoy is extremely low.

In this HTYC episode, Scott Anthony Barlow and his guest, Lynn Marie Morski will share her unconventional, yet courageous approach to doing a career pivot. You’ll hear how she has quit almost every career she’s started, became a doctor and lawyer, and used her range of experience from switching industries (like multimedia), to co-found a medical tourism startup. Think quitters never get ahead? Think again.

What to Listen For

  • How quitting can pave the way to new career growth opportunities, including some you could never anticipate!
  • Why the most important thing you can do in your career search is to focus on knowing and understanding yourself and then matching those things to your opportunities instead of chasing a particular job title.
  • How it’s possible that most people who will get a degree, then settle into a job (or two) for long periods of time may not have a large enough “data set” on which to base their ideas about what it is they REALLY want in their careers.

“It’s like oxygen to be curious” - many people would agree and many would disagree to this quote from my guest, Jeff Madoff. For those that disagree, I’d like to remind you that the majority of revolutionary inventions throughout history stem from curiosity.

But how would someone use curiosity as a catalyst for their career growth?

In this HTYC episode, Scott Anthony Barlow and his guest, Jeff, dive into the “how”. We’ll also shut down the debate on being a generalist or specialist and explain why it’s better to instead be both when doing a career change and switching industries. You’ll hear how Jeff’s background in fashion design and film and video production, allowed him to become well known and work with some of the biggest organizations like Victoria's Secret, Ralph Lauren, and even Harvard.

I’m sure you’ve heard this countless times - “to be successful in anything requires you to have confidence in yourself”. While dealing with limiting beliefs isn't anything new to any of us, there are some common patterns people face when making a career change.

The reality is, you will hit low points along the way and it’s at those darkest moments that dealing with limiting beliefs can feel almost unbearable, pushing you to give up on trying to achieve career happiness.

In this HTYC episode, Scott Anthony Barlow sits down with his guest, Vicky Meng to talk about what it was like going through the 2 major low points she hit during her career change journey before landing her ideal role. We’ll also explore the 3 things Vicky did to prepare herself for some of her weakest moments (including turning down a good opportunity to continue looking for an ideal opportunity).
