Happen To Your Career

What happens when you have a job that seems prestigious, most people would love to have it, but you can't stand it? We all want to feel successful. Often, that means getting a job that other people regard as important or prestigious, even if the job actually makes us miserable. It’s one more way we allow the expectations of others, the unwritten rules, to trap us in a role that isn’t a fit. Jackie Yerby has had many high-impact roles in public policy, but she still wasn’t fulfilled. Today she discusses her distinguished career in public policy and how she escaped from the prestige trap.

What you’ll learn

  • Why a job that’s ideal for others may not be an ideal role for you.
  • How to be true to yourself and not let others’ expectations dictate your career
  • How to figure out your own definition of success and why it’s so important for your career happiness

When you’re not in your ideal role, your job may look picture perfect from the outside, but internally you are likely struggling with what to do to find real career happiness. This can also be incredibly isolating, because it can be extremely hard to explain to others, even your loved ones, why your career is not satisfying. It’s also often hard to come to terms with the fact that it’s time for a career change, when you’ve worked hard to get to where you are and define your career. Reaching out to let someone know you’re not happy and ask for career help is the first step on the journey to finding your ideal career. Louise McNee shares the story of her reluctance to ask for help with career change, until she finally reached out to HTYC and landed a new, more fulfilling role.

What you’ll learn

  • How to overcome the natural reluctance to ask for career help in order to make a change
  • How to figure out what you truly want out of life to find your ideal role.
  • Why knowing yourself is a prerequisite to knowing what you actually want in a career.

Traditional job searching doesn’t work. You decide you want a career change so you start searching for titles you think you would enjoy, but in the end you are trying to squeeze yourself into the box of the few roles you see on job boards. If you do find a role that aligns with what you believe you want out of your career, and you land it, you usually start out excited about your new role… but eventually realize something is off. Many times the role does not cater to your strengths or the company doesn't align with your values. Laura Parker shares her story of what happened when she completed a career change, and almost immediately realized that she was still unhappy in her role.

What You'll Learn

  • How Laura knew she needed a career change in the first place
  • The best way to go about leaving a company soon after you’ve been hired
  • How Laura figured out what she needed to do next in order to be happy in her career.

We all have strengths and weaknesses, and as we advance through our careers, we learn to cater to our strengths and compensate for our weaknesses. But sometimes, the aspects of our personalities that we think of as weaknesses may be our greatest strengths. Growing up, Ross Loufbourrow thought of ADHD as his greatest weakness. It was only once he graduated college and began his career that he discovered ADHD wasn’t a weakness – it was a super power. Ross shares his story on this week’s podcast.

In an age of email and LinkedIn, networking has never been easier. But networking has also become a dirty word. It means bothering people for favors or having them bother you, and knowing all the time that neither of you has any interest in actually getting to know the other person. Not surprisingly, this kind of transactional networking doesn’t really work. On the podcast this week, I chat with Darrah Brustein about her approach to networking by pursuing meaningful professional relationships.
