Happen To Your Career - Meaningful Work, Career Change, & Career Design (Careers)

What do you want?

It’s a simple enough question.

I’ll bet you can't easily answer that question?

Go ahead and give it a try! I’ll wait!

Harder than it seems right?

But what if you could intentionally and succintly answer that question? When you have the answer to what you really want in your career and in your life and really go after it, it allows you to do things most people would consider exceptional or even impossible.

And that is exactly what we’re going to cover today!

IS REFLECTION ON THE PAST YOUR KEY TO CAREER HAPPINESS?

The short answer is “H-E- double hockey sticks to the NO”.

(mostly because I love hockey and a little because reflection is not the magic bullet alone!)

But what’s the longer more nuanced answer?

To be clear; reflecting on the past alone is not going to get you where you want to go in your career or your life. It will take intentional action to move toward work that fits you, your values, and your strengths (and even your income expectations).

But what’s also true is that for the action to be intentional you must know exactly what you want.

How do you do that?

MOST PEOPLE THINK THAT THEY KNOW THEIR STRENGTHS…

I hear them say things like “I learn fast” or “I’m good with people” but most people have not spent enough time or effort to truly understand what it is that they are great at or have the potential to be great at!

Maybe these are true, but these aren’t specific enough to really be what you are great at. What is it that makes you great with people, What is it specifically that you enjoy in the interaction with others, is it even the interaction at all, or maybe something else.

When I hear something as vague as “I’m good with people”, which I do in maybe 7 out of every 10 interviews with professionals, I immediately try to start digging to understand what they really actually mean.

It could be that they are great at: relating to others OR communicating with people OR helping people problem solve OR building relationships quickly OR about a million other possibilities.

What on earth do you really mean?

As human beings, when we get stuck, we tend to focus on one thing that we latch onto as the “reason” why. Or one thing that if we could only do, it would solve all of our problems.

It’s never just one thing. It’s always more nuanced than that.

There is one thing that is very clear though, The reasons why you think you’re stuck and the reasons why you’re actually stuck, are two completely different things.

One of the most common career change misconceptions is that you’ll have to start over – that all of your experience will go out the window if you make a change. It’s difficult to imagine a scenario where you don’t take a step down… where you actually get a promotion on top of finally finding work you actually love. How can you make that happen? In today’s episode, we’re revealing the 4 most common ways that people change careers (without starting over!) and talking to 4 people from each category.

What you’ll learn

  • The 4 types of career transitions
  • How to use transferable skills & your experience when changing careers (it’s different than you think!)
  • How career coaches rank the difficulty of the different career transitions

Everyone I talk to wants freedom, until they realize how it really actually works.

One thing that comes up frequently while coaching people through career changes is the idea of obtaining freedom in their life and work. Freedom means different things for everyone. Sometimes it’s freedom to travel, or financial freedom, or just having the freedom and flexibility to pick up your kids from school.

“For so so long, freedom meant the ability to be able to do what I want, when I want, where I want.”

Natalie Sisson, The Suitcase Entrepreneur, traveled the world for many years - living and working wherever she wanted to. She now has a completely different definition than most about what freedom actually means for her and some of what she has learned from talking with hundreds, or even thousands, of people about what freedom means.

Matt Toy, also took a job offer, but realized, like many of the people we work with, that what he could be doing was staring him in the face the whole time.

Have you noticed any recurring themes in your life?

These patterns can range from the habits you form, the hobbies you enjoy, the work you choose, the tasks you hate, the type of people you surround yourself with, and so on.

Digging deeper into your own patterns in your career and life is the first piece of research you need to do before you start down the career change road, but we also know that sometimes it is hard to accept those patterns for what they truly are.

Matthew Toy struggled with accepting what everyone else around him knew about how big of an impact his own passion for practicing yoga had on his life.

As kids, we all have dreams and aspirations for what we want to do when we grow up. However, as we get older, we tend to put down our dreams to pursue “reality” - or what we perceive is reality. Those dreams we had no longer fit into what we consider realistic.

Years ago when I first started Happen To Your Career, my good friend Mark and I created an 8-Day mini-course to help people begin to figure out what they really wanted to be doing for their career and their life. We’ve now had over 25,000 people go through that mini-course. One of the exercises in that course involves declaring 3 wildly unrealistic things you want to do, be or become these could be occupations, jobs, roles, whatever you wanted, Sky’s the limit. The only rule is that it has to be wildly unrealistic.

We started getting thousands of responses emailed to us and there was something interesting that we noticed right away. They’re all big goals sure, but what else? None of them are actually impossible or unachievable.

What does this tell us? It means that the things we believe to be wildly unrealistic are only unrealistic because we believe them to be. It’s about the story that we tell ourselves.

How do people actually accomplish wildly unrealistic goals especially when you have reality standing in your way, like a full time job or obligations like kids that like to eat, or saving for their college. Or the simple fact that you have only so much energy in a single day before you pass out?

Reality.

We all have our current reality. This might come from obligations, parents, kids, work, serving on that board that you agreed to back before you realized how much time it was going to take, yes it’s for a good cause but maybe you didn’t actually think it would be an additional 20 hours a month.

Whatever your reality is. All of us have it. The question becomes: How do you accomplish career and life goals that you might consider to be wildly unrealistic when “reality” is always pressing on us?

When you set out to achieve wildly unrealistic goals you can always assume the path you follow will be the one less taken. This is, of course, also true with wildly unrealistic career changes!

Allison and I continue to delve deeper into the things that led to her career change (and changed her entire life, too!).

As she completed the Clifton’s Strengthsfinder assessment during her CCB course, Allison discovered the formula for her own career happiness. She says:

confidence + strengths + motion = dream career

She began to imagine a career she could be passionate about. When asked the question, “What are some of the things you can’t stop doing?” Allison found herself responding, “I can’t stop asking people if they like their job.”

This answer helped her see that she was obsessed with career fulfillment. For five or six years, she had been showing interest in others’ career success. Even when she was shifting gears with her job title, she kept asking people whether or not they loved their work.

“Looking back at the big picture, even though my jobs were so different, every single job, whether it was part of the role or not—if it was just interactions with employees or how I felt about myself in that position—everything pointed to my dream job.”

Allison realized she was good at simplifying processes for people and creating new programs. She had fun communicating to people in a language they understood. When she thought about her signature strengths, she realized she could use all of these skills in helping others find fulfillment.

Today, Allison is a professional career coach. She’s an entrepreneur living out her multipotentiality, and she can honestly say she’s discovered her dream career.

Very few people will find career happiness in this life, whether it’s because they don’t believe it’s available to them or because they can’t identify what would even bring fulfillment, but Allison is living proof that you can do work you love and be paid well for it.

Allison Kolberg (Curbow) was good at everything. The problem was…she couldn’t find something she enjoyed doing.

As a self-proclaimed Upholder (defined in Gretchen Rubin’s Four Tendencies), Allison had a knack, or rather a compulsion, for meeting expectations.

This habit led to a “see and conquer” mentality in the career world. She’d see a job posting, and whether or not she genuinely wanted to do the work, she’d take on the challenge. In other words, she’d shift into whatever shape necessary to accomplish the goals of that role.

While pursuing her degree, Allison worked as an office manager in a typical 8-hour office environment. Not too long into her role, she realized the clock-in-clock-out-pushing-papers desk job wasn’t for her. Recognizing a need for hands-on work, Allison routed her college studies for a career in oil and gas.

Upon graduation, she was hired as a High-pressure Pump Operator in Anchorage, Alaska. Looking back, Allison says she was drawn to the job’s hands-on nature and the opportunity to work in big picture operations. She felt a special love for the procedures and problem-solving ability required for her two week on/two week off schedule. She was good at her job, but the love didn’t last.

Allison comes on the podcast today with Scott to tell her story of how she made her transition.

After she made the changes in her life to create her career change, she realized that it was more than a career change - it was a life change.

On today’s episode, she explains one of the struggles she had:

“I had so many different skills and interests, and I jumped around so much that one job sometimes didn't look anything like the next job. I was grasping at straws to try to fit all these aspects of my life into one [career] that I didn't even know was possible. So, I just jumped from job to job.

I felt like a flip-flopper. It didn't feel very good. When I would want to move on to the next thing, I felt like I had to subdue or discredit the parts of myself that were in the other position.”

By the time she got through her career transition, she was able to look back with better clarity:

“Looking back at the big picture, even though my jobs were so different, every single job, whether it was part of the role or not—if it was just interactions with employees or how I felt about myself in that position—everything pointed to my dream job.”

In this episode, Gia tells us how she was always a girl who had a diary growing up. Nowadays, Gia got back into journaling and starts every morning writing down what she is grateful for. The other questions she writes about are what she is looking forward to and her top priorities. The most significant benefit Gia has seen with her journaling is self-awareness; having a better connection with yourself will provide clarity on what really matters in life. The last time Gia found clarity was after a year of working on a tech startup. Gia was struggling with whether she should invest more time and effort or close it and move on to something else. After journaling for a few months, she got clarity on precisely what she needed to do.

Free flow journaling is another method Gia uses to get clarity on her thoughts and mindset. Writing without restraint is best for those situations when you cannot quite articulate what seems off about a particular topic. For instance, Gia is trying to move her child into the public school system; she has been free flow journaling to articulate the struggle she is having inside her head. Putting it down on paper really gets the juices flowing and allows you to make better decisions.

When Gia would ask her female clients what they accomplished in their careers over the past year, they could not articulate a response. If you cannot answer how you add value to a company, most likely you will not be getting that job. Gia says women need to be able to confidently and clearly articulate how they bring value to the table. One way to start thinking about your answer is by writing down what you do every single day. After a few months, you will have more details and could clearly explain how your presence adds value. Gia tells her clients to keep tabs on the following six areas:

  1. The actual work that you did today.
  2. What did you do to build your brand?
  3. What are your community contributions?
  4. Did you invest time in your professional skills?
  5. Did you invest time in your soft skills?
  6. How you went above and beyond.

Once people started journaling these six things, often they would realize they were lacking in certain areas, and it would result in intentional action taking. For example, when someone realizes it has been weeks and they have done nothing to build their brand, that person would start taking actionable steps to increase their brand awareness. Some barriers that come up for Gia’s clients when journaling about their workday are procrastination and time. People always claim they do not have enough time to reflect and journal. Gia suggests opening up Google Drive and take thirty seconds to write down what you have done before you leave work for the day.

Enjoy the show!

Melanie, like you, identifies as a multipod.

When Melanie Buford was making a college decision, she felt torn between two very different directions: On the one hand, she had a knack for math, and she felt she could excel in an engineering type role. On the other hand, Melanie felt fascinated by psychology and humanities. These two areas of interest had little to no overlap, so not only was Melanie choosing between majors but also universities.

This was the first time Melanie experienced the familiar pull of the multipotentialite journey.

After college, Melanie accepted a role with Americorps and moved to San Francisco, where she participated in a program called Public Allies. Working for Americorps was a combination job, as Melanie served at a nonprofit for four days per week and spent her Fridays completing Public Allies’ social justice leadership development program. Melanie and her coworkers were passionate, multifaceted people.

Fast forward to now, and Melanie has become a professor of career education for the University of Cincinnati, researcher and nonfiction writer, nonprofit supporter, and science fiction writer. She enjoys helping multi-talented students discover a future that fits their unique wiring, and she loves digging into data on multipotentialites, personality tests, and strengths assessments.

Is staying at a job you hate holding you back from happiness? What if you’ve changed careers…and the new work wasn’t quite the fit you thought it would be?

After helping a couple thousand people make career changes, you notice a few commonalities.

We’ve realized that EVERYONE has barriers to making their change. Especially the busy, high achieving peeps that we’ve worked with. You are no exception!

You know how you always hear those success stories of what other people have done? If you’re like me (or you’re human), sometimes they can make you a little jealous or depressed.

How come it always works out so well for those other people?

Well, here’s the hidden reality behind every single one of the success stories we’ve published:

Zero of them were easy, AND none of them went perfectly.

In fact, we find that much of the time we are helping our students make it easier to change to work they love by focusing on the right things, but focusing on the right things alone doesn’t automatically make you successful.

In today’s episode, I talk about how career happiness really works. In fact, this episode is one of the lessons I teach inside Career Change Bootcamp.

A little while back, I had a Skype call with a former Google employee who made a transition into a role that fits his strengths even better. He is totally thrilled!

I wanted to tell you about it because you might be thinking “who on earth chooses to leave Google? That’s the holy grail of dream jobs!” And that’s what most people think from the outside, right?

But a big trap that it’s easy to fall into when you’re searching for jobs is comparing your insides to someone else’s outsides.

For example, being in a job that looks like a dream job on the outside doesn’t mean it’s going to be the dream fit for YOUR inner values, strengths and interests.

I can’t tell you how many people find HTYC because they’re in a job they thought would be great, but isn’t — it ends up being someone else’s dream and not their own. Or, we get emails every day about people who feel like they can’t get clarity on what their next career move looks like, so they’re stuck in a mental pressure cooker wanting to make a change forward but not knowing how.

Does that sound like you? If so, grab a pen and paper because I have a ton of lessons I’ve learned from personally coaching 1,100 people through career transitions that I want to share with you to save you time, headaches, and help you make the transition you’re dreaming of happen.

In today’s episode, I share 6 keys to career happiness and then how to use this information to make your change and how to focus your time to be most effective.

I vividly remember being in a job that wasn’t fulfilling at all. When I was there, I didn’t understand how this whole career happiness thing worked and honestly thought that if I could just get to a better job situation then it would solve all my problems.

Which means that many of us are going about the job change somewhat blindly, we’re looking at job postings online or trying to network or updating our LinkedIn profiles even spending time going on interviews but the problem is that we don’t even know exactly what a fulfilling career looks like for us.

Now here’s the tricky part, we as human beings are pretty terrible at determining what will actually make us happy.

So what happens when you’re in your role working for a company and, for the most part, it's been great.

You've been there for a while, and you know lots of good things have come out of it.

You've worked with a good team and you've had a lot of fun.

It's been pretty meaningful, except …

Now a lot of those things have either stopped or changed.

Whether it's caused by a company merger or a new boss or a completely different situation.

And that is that is where our next podcast guest found themselves.

I say guest, but this is actually a bit of a different episode.

We've done this once or twice before where we've shared an actual coaching session with you, allowing you to sit in as a fly on the wall, listening to somebody that we've worked with.

On today’s episode, you're going to hear Elizabeth begin in the early stages of identifying what she really wants and needs.

And even more importantly than that, some of the ways that I guide her through to help begin making this happen immediately.

You're not going to hear any magic bullets in this episode (because there are none in reality), but you are going to hear some things that you may be able to integrate into your own personal life and career change right away.

“Most of the people I know, and coach, are recovering people-pleasers…”

New York Times Best Selling Author, Michael Hyatt said this to me in our recent conversation.

In fact, I’m a recovering people-pleaser myself.

In my first professional job, I working between 80-90 hours a week. Part of that was because the job was a bad fit. Part of that was because there was a huge expectation to work a ton of hours. And part of that was that I said “yes” to everything my boss asked me to do.

Absolutely everything.

Saying “yes” to every project - to every request.

“Yes, sir, I can make that happen!”

“Yes, I can get that extra presentation done.”

Saying “yes” to all that took a bad situation and turned it into a totally intolerable situation.

Saying “yes” to too many things can hold you back from career happiness. At first, you may be excited that you’re the person that everyone can depend on.

But then it changes.

People start asking you to do more and more because “______ always finds a way to get it done.” In fact, it gets to the point that the people make you their first stop.

This can cause resentment, stress, and fatigue - none of which produce career happiness. But you also find it difficult - or impossible - to stop saying “yes.”

Saying “no” is exactly what we talk about in today’s episode with Michael Hyatt. Michael is a best-selling author (multiple times over) and was previously the CEO of a publishing company before starting his own company.

Michael is also a self-admitted, recovering people-pleaser. As such, throughout past few decades, he has had to learn to say “no” gracefully. In other words, he had to protect his own time and priorities. At one point, he said it this way:

“The way that you can give people a really firm ‘No’ is to have a really firm ‘yes’ on the other side of it.”

Also, he gives specific examples of how he can say “no” to a request, but still present a solution for the person. And people thank him for saying “no.”

Listen to this episode to hear the whole conversation, including:

  • Why it’s so hard for you to say “No” to people...and what to do about it
  • How to get back hours of free time each week
  • The connection between having a vision and conquering daily distractions
  • Using elimination, automation, and delegation to crush even more tasks on your to-do list
  • Why you need more than one routine to run your day
  • The most important things you can do to be more focused and more productive

Also, as an added bonus, Michael shares the best advice on how to stay happily married for 40 years.

We’ve now asked hundreds of people who’ve made successful career pivots one question after they’ve completed the journey:

“What advice would you give someone who’s decided they want to make a career change?”

What came back was surprising! It didn’t have anything to do with the best resume ever or the best tactic to market your skills or even the steps to take

Nope! Instead it turns out that all of them described making a career change as a journey and there is far more important advice to consider.

We’ve taken the advice from 6 successful career changers and put it into this episode.

If we are always looking for external milestones, like a new job title or pay increase, without first addressing the internal stuff, we’ll always be on the hunt.

We’ll constantly be looking for that feeling, and asking ourselves that question: “Is this it?”

During this week’s podcast episode, I dug deep with Kelly, a Career Change Bootcamp graduate and a woman who went through a radical mindset shift a couple of months ago.

She was in the same exact place. She had all of the external things: a great job at Linkedin, an awesome apartment in the Big Apple, a savings account that most of us could only imagine…but she still wasn’t happy. From the outside, it looked like she had everything.

But on the inside, she was struggling to answer those big life questions: What does it mean to lead a meaningful, purposeful life?

Have you ever considered trying to start your own coaching business? (A career coach, a fitness coach, a relationship coach, a leadership coach, anything like that?)

You might be the kind of person who’s naturally gifted in helping others, but you don’t want to become a pastor or a psychotherapist, so going into coaching feels like a perfect next step for your career.

Coaching can be an AMAZING career fit for many people -- and there’s a huge need for actually good coaches out there -- but there are a lot of realities about pursuing it as a full-time career path that you’ll want to know before you quit your job and start the business. Being in love with the dream of calling yourself a coach can be very different from truly having a passion for the day-to-day life of being one.

For example, how much do you enjoy sales conversations? Working for yourself is an eat-what-you-kill kind of job, so you’re going to spend a TON of time bringing in clients so you can keep the lights on and pay the bills.

And, how much time out of your week would you estimate you’ll be on the phone with coaching clients? Whatever you’re guessing, guess again and listen to this podcast episode with Marc Mawhinney to hear about what it was like for him (and for Scott) in building their coaching businesses.

On this episode, you’ll learn how Marc got into coaching (and the books that have been his biggest inspiration), how building a coaching business is a bit like being a modern-day caveman, how to ensure you’re not getting paid in meatballs, and how to decide when (or if) you need a coaching certification.

You’ve probably heard people say things like. “Big Dreams take time” or “that type of success takes time” or my absolute favorite. “Just give it a little time!” But what if the key accomplishing wildly unrealistic goals didn’t have anything to do with time? What if that was one of the most common misconceptions that gets repeated all over the world. This is episode 3 of a 3 part series on how to accomplish wildly unrealistic career goals.

Years ago when I first started Happen To Your Career, my good friend Mark and I created an 8 Day mini-course to help people begin to figure out what they really wanted to be doing for their career and their life.

None of them them are actually impossible or unachievable.

What does this tell us? It means that the things we believe to be wildly unrealistic are only unrealistic because we believe them to be. It’s about the story that we tell ourselves.

Everyone and their mother is going to email you about your resolutions and goals now that it’s the beginning of 2018.

I don’t want to do that to you. Plus you already know I have a serious aversion to doing what everyone else is doing?

What do you notice about the Paradigm shifting changes?

  1. The average person can’t imagine how it can work in their own life.
  2. Most of the world can’t “just do that”.
  3. You might automatically say, “that could never work for me”

It takes completely reframing your future to be able to achieve a paradigm shifting change.

In this conversation with we get deep into how:

  • Learn how to take the goals you are passionate and excited about and take the next little steps to turn them into a reality this year.
  • How to change your limiting beliefs from a negative into a positive.
  • Learn how to use confirmation bias as a benefit to gain goal success.
  • Learn how important it is to put words to and vocalize the whisper of ideas you have been feeling.
  • Get help identifying the little secret beliefs and limiting factors you tell yourself that are causing you a roadblock.
  • Learn to stop playing negative Jedi mind tricks on yourself and start feeling the positive force within.
  • Reframe your negative beliefs into positive beliefs and learn how to reinforce those positive beliefs with data points to give you forward momentum.
  • How 60 minutes of your time brainstorming can open up numerous possibilities.

Sure. Feeling safe and at ease is great and all, but what goals have you ever achieved by staying in your comfort zone??

We’re willing to bet on not many at all.

Nobody ever achieves much by staying in their comfort zone.

WHY?

Well, achieving goals requires you to aim for something just a little bitout of your reach.

Having a goal makes you look forward to something attainable that may not be in your comfort zone (at the moment).

Then the question of how to get out of your comfort zone comes up.

When it comes to career change, more likely than not you’ll be faced with the choice to break out of your comfort zone to progress down a new path that may be full of unknowns.

Long before you even begin thinking about going on an interview, you need to get into the right mindset. This accounts for nearly 80% of your interview success!

Having a confident, present mindset allows you to head into your future interviews with ease. It channels your nerves (those sweaty palms and racing heart) into excitement instead. And, it allows you to be yourself.

In order to get into this mindset though, you have to know yourself well, and respect your past experiences. You need to understand your career equity. And, that takes introspection.

That introspection doesn’t come overnight either. It’s a practice that builds up over time, which is why “cramming” for interviews isn’t effective. Being true self in an interview comes down to self-development.

What happens when you’re already in a good work and life situation but what you really want is to be in an “ideal” situation?

For example: What if you have a career you love, get paid well, have great relationships… but you recognize it could even be better.

We’ve learned by working with thousands of people that to get to lead a life most people will never lead, you have to do things most people wouldn’t be willing to do.

While this can range from doing the hard work to figure out what your ideal life looks like to contacting hard to reach people, it always means doing things many others are unwilling to do.

For Robbie, who had a great role in DC with a great company, this meant getting away to get new experiences and clarity on what she wanted for her next chapter in her life.

It also meant designing a sabbatical that was both fun, uncomfortable, scary and fulfilling a 5 year dream of a multi month road trip around the continental US.

Our team got the pleasure of helping her design this experiment leading to her next step.

Along the way I personally got to meet her as she and I sat down in our Podcast and Video Studio in Moses Lake WA to talk about:

What caused her to want to leave an already good career
How she was intentional about designing a sabbatical that would give her more feedback and clarity
The simple formula to not accepting less in career and life (which came from Robbie’s late father)

It happens to all of us: you’re cruising along (in your career, your relationship, your health, whatever).

You put your destination into the GPS, started following the directions on autopilot, and you’re fiddling with the music on the radio, take your eyes off the road for what only feels like a moment, and WHAM.

A pothole — seemingly out of nowhere — opens up and practically swallows your car tire, leaving you feeling trapped and helpless.

You were minding your own business, not paying attention, and all of a sudden, you’re stuck with a blown-out tire in the middle of the highway, watching other cars pass you by.

If you’re the kind of person who’s usually self-sufficient, a high achiever who did pretty well in school, this kind of situation is particularly frustrating.

“How did this happen? How did I end up here…and where do I go from here?”

If those questions are ones you’ve pondered at any point in your life, then keep reading. We have a heck of a podcast for you all about unconscious mindsets and how to get yourself back on track from mindset success coach Karenina Jahnigen.

Outdated mental operating systems can be incredibly painful — they keep us trapped in old beliefs that can suffocate current potential and opportunity.

Yet often in life, our places of deepest pain and suffering are the places from which we have the most to give. That’s certainly true of Karenina. Listen to her story of overcoming incredible pain and limitations throughout her life — and how she used her own learnings to help others as a coach who has helped people truly transform their lives.

Imagine this scene: you’re driving to the office, and you feel your stomach tighten up.

It’s not like butterflies, it’s more like anxious nerves starting to kick into high gear.

You park, hesitate for a moment in the car before walking up to the building, sigh, and wonder to yourself, “Do I really *have* to today?”

But if you’re anything like the thousands of people we’ve helped, there’s a part of your brain that probably also pipes up and says: “Appreciate what you have! This is a stable job with good benefits, is impressive to other people, and gives you vacation and sick leave. And leaving would have huge consequences on your family, your mortgage payments…what would you even do instead?”

Or, even more scary: “What if I change jobs and it’s worse?”

It makes it really painful to start to answer the question: Should I Quit My Job?

But it doesn’t have to be.

Here are four questions to help you weigh the Pros and Cons of quitting your job — versus some of the possible potential upside of staying.

On this week’s episode of The Happen To Your Career Podcast, four-time NYT bestselling author Gretchen Rubin dives into the science behind unmet resolutions, the anchor holding you back from your side gig, and the reason one “right way” might be...well...bullshit. A seasoned podcaster, she regularly co-hosts the Happier Podcast where she provides tips for making and breaking habits and success strategies for each personality type.

In her latest book, The Four Tendencies, Gretchen explains a personality framework involving, as you would guess, four tendencies. Each identified type is characterized by their tendency to respond to inner expectations and outer expectations. (Inner expectations being those you set on yourself—like New Year’s resolutions; outer expectations being those put on you by friends, coworkers, family, etc.)

Think back to the day of your high school graduation.

Remember the heat. Remember the squirming. Remember the excitement to get out of that place, and move on to something better.

But, for a second think back to the speeches that day. Whether it was your Principal or your Valedictorian (or maybe you!), they all had one thing in common. Each person imparted a piece of wisdom (or warnings) to you and your fellow 18-year-old graduates.

They told you: “Remember, it’s about the journey, not the destination.”

If you’re anything like me, that phrase went in one ear and out the other. You just finished the longest journey of your life: high school. And now, you were jumping out of your seat, although a bit nervous about the unknown, for whatever was to come next.

But then…you got there.

You arrived at that place–any adult milestone really (college, first job, moving to a new city), and this fearful, uneasy thought might have crept into your mind. You try to push it away, but it always comes back: “There mustbe something else out there.”

So, you continue to search. New job, new city. New friends, new relationships.

But it somehow, each step you take still ends up feeling the same.

How do you know when you’re perfectionism is getting in the way of your progress? Or is it what helps you to be successful. Or is it somewhere in between.

A short while back we released a podcast episode on “perfectionism” and how you might not even know it’s holding you back.

We got great feedback on this episode from many of our listeners. Caroline Adams and I scheduled a followup conversation to debrief on the podcast and what we learned from creating a podcast on perfectionism. Ironically we discovered on creating a podcast on perfectionism that our own perfectionist tendencies had reared their ugly head.

This turned into a private conversation about where perfectionism becomes an issue for both of us. We go deep into where it’s caused challenges for our own lives and work… Even when we began this conversation we never intended it to become a podcast we’re sharing it with you because we also discuss how we each individually handle the perfectionism when it pops up ready to hold us back! What is my passion?? Passion can be defined in many ways in relation to your career.

Christie Mims, the founder of the Revolutionary Club, a Forbes Top 100 website for your career, wants people to separate their passion from their job. According to her, in the grander scale of things, passion is bigger than just your job.

So, what is passion?

Basically, passion is who you are and your job is how you express that passion.

Passion is your North Star and your job is fueled by your passion.

Finding out what is your passion takes a little bit of courage in order to get off the beaten career path and embrace who you are and what motivates you to do good work.

“You can be known for being a strategic thinker. You can be known for being the person that’s calm in a crisis. You can be known for being the person who has a great sense of humor who is able to connect with people.” You can help identify some of your best qualities to find your passion by thinking about some of your biggest personality traits that are positive and start to socialize those traits with yourself and learn ways you can best communicate them to others.

In the podcast, Christie shares how to find your passion and how to turn that into a career that you love.

Have you ever been so excited about a new project or goal that you’ve set for yourself that you just can’t wait to start?

You sit and visualize yourself going through the motions of the process, checking off all the boxes on your to-do list, and finally you check off that last task, then you bask in the feeling of victory after you’ve achieved your accomplishment.

That entire process, the drive and determination, the movement forward, that feeling of accomplishment…that is what it means to be unhackable.

BUT HOW DOES IT APPLY TO MY CAREER?

To be unhackable means to close the gap that exists between your ideas and the implementation of your ideas.

It means building yourself up to become an unstoppable force that reaches goals.

Take that philosophy and apply it to the process of your career transition and you become unhackable by eliminating all of the obstacles that stop you from reaching your dream career.

What drives many people to career change is the idea that there is a big potential for something more than what they’ve got going on in their career right now.

But sometimes even people with the strongest mindsets, get hacked.

There are a handful (maybe more than a handful) of things that stop people dead in their tracks as they begin their journey into a new career.

Some begin to feel like imposters as they begin to progress in their career change.

Some self-sabotage and start doubting their potential, then slowly they unintentionally begin to put the brakes on their path to a new career.

But just like computer systems have software that work to prevent getting hacked, there are ways for you to be proactive in becoming unhackable.

In order to get in front of the hacking, we need to identify what is leaving you vulnerable to getting hacked in the first place.

WHAT IS STOPPING YOU FROM BECOMING UNHACKABLE IN YOUR CAREER CHANGE?

“The mind is everything. What you think you become.”―Buddha

The most common obstacles that stop a lot of people during their career change are all about their mindset.

Here are the top three things stopping people from becoming unhackable (with some examples):

1) Problem: They lack the confidence in their knowledge & skills

They start thinking about themselves in a self-sabotaging ways.

  • They’ve been imagining that they’re experts in something.
  • That they really don’t have the transferable skills required to follow through on a new career.
  • That they’re really not good enough to make a career change.

2) Problem: They’re unsure of the direction or focus they want to pursue

  • They have a lot of interests, a lot of passions, but they’re not sure that their skills really apply to either.
  • They think that working in passions is a myth and that sticking to what they’ve always known and done is a safer bet, than taking a chance on something new.
  • Nothing has worked out for them to this point, that they’re stuck on what’s next.

3) Problem: They don’t know how to sell yourselves

  • They doubt the value their skills bring to the table.
  • They don’t know how to effectively market themselves.
  • They’re not “salespeople.” They don’t want to seem pushy.
  • They’re afraid of rejection.

SO, HOW DO YOU BECOME THAT UNSTOPPABLE, UNHACKABLE FORCE TO SUCCESSFULLY CHANGE CAREERS?

“Whatever the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve.” – Napoleon Hill

Well, we change your mindset when it comes to your career change.

1. Get out of your own head and stop judging yourself.
2. Refocus your time and energy on your goal.

LACKING CONFIDENCE?

If you’re struggling with the confidence in your own knowledge and skills in a particular industry, you need to, first, acknowledge that there is a reason you started down the path of career change (and KUDOS to you on that note, because not a lot of people even make it as far as to acknowledge that a change needs to be made).

Remember that you started down this path because you knew that there was something bigger for you out there (and there is!).

So, if you need to, take a step back and take a breath and then come back into your process of career change refreshed and motivated to continue. As Kary Oberbrunner says, “Show up filled up.”

You are the expert and the guru. You have the skills to bring value to people.

Regain your perspective and come back full of what you already know you know and move forward.

CAN’T FIND A CAREER THAT FITS?

Who do you want to help? What do you want to contribute your talents to?

If you are having a little trouble answering those questions, ask yourself:

What have at least three people asked you for advice on?

Those people have come to you for help in something they trust you enough to help solve. That makes you credible. That proves that there is a need out there and that skill makes it something you can capitalize on.

From that little exercise, you can align your skills and strengths and begin to be more intentional in your career change.

WONDERING HOW TO MARKET YOURSELF?

Ever heard of a Values Proposition Statement (VPS)?

Anyone that is looking to change careers should have one.

Think of it like the menu at a drive-thru window. You know when you pull up to a drive-thru, you know exactly what they’re selling.

That is what your VPS should do.

It provides clarity of your intentions and lays out what you have to offer your next employer.

Here’s a formula to give you a little framework to build on:

“I AM A ____________, WHO HELPS ___________ DO OR UNDERSTAND _________ SO THAT ______________”

Once you have your VPS lined up and ready to roll, you’re ¾ of the way there.

The last quarter of the marketing equation requires you to change your mindset from “selling yourself” to a mindset that selling is serving, and marketing your knowledge and skills is storytelling.

Once you can frame your pitch in that way, you’re golden.

People don’t want to be sold, they want to be helped.

NEXT STEPS

Becoming unhackable is a mindset change.

Building your confidence, finding your footing in the direction you want to take your career, and learning how to take all of that and put it into action by effectively marketing your skills and knowledge as assets will make you unhackable to continue to successfully transition your career.

Your journey into a new career isn’t easy.

And because the process is a journey, we know it’s easy to let yourself to get hacked.

What if you’re a creative thinker who’s in a role that doesn’t allow you to use all that creativity? I would say “square peg, round hole” but usually it’s more “well rounded” people that function in a “square” environment. They can fit in, they just don’t want to have to.

Every single day we get people who are creatively minded that email us and say:

According to our guest (and coiner of the term), Emilie Wapnick, a multipotentialite is a person that doesn’t have “one true calling the way that specialists do.”

Emilie describes multipods as people with many paths that pursue all of them, either sequentially or simultaneously (or both).

A person with Multipotentiality “thrives on learning, exploring, and mastering new skills.” As innovators and problem solvers, the multi-passionate have the need to discover anything and everything to satisfy their curiosity.

Starting the career search process can be intimidating, especially since the first thing any job search website asks for is WHAT? Like you’re supposed to know what job title you want in the first place?

When you don’t know what career path you want to take, the process is not only hard to get started, it can be paralyzing when you don’t have all of the answers. Just thinking about a career change causes stress, anxiety, frustration, and fear to rise inside many people because the majority feel stuck and unsure of what to do first.

But, there’s a way to get unstuck.

You have to be willing to change your mindset and approach your career change differently than you have before.

If you’re willing to do that, all you need now it to make the time and energy to get you through the journey.

Below, we’ve outlined tips from Kathryn Minshew, CEO and Co-Founder of The Muse, a career discovery platform that “puts the human at the center” and helps over 50+ million people a year in their career search.

Now, pull out a notebook and let’s get you started down the right path to get you unstuck and find your new career path.

Everyone and their mother is going to email you about your resolutions and goals now that it’s the beginning of 2018. I don’t want to do that to you. Plus you already know I have a serious aversion to doing what everyone else is doing?

So instead I thought I would email you an example of what NOT to do and then give you a complete step by step process of how completely reframe your future!

What’s the difference between a meager change vs a paradigm shifting change?

It takes completely reframing your future to be able to achieve a paradigm shifting change. More importantly when you go through the efforts to make them happen, you will not be the same person you were beforehand.

A paradigm shift you want to make might not have anything to do with travel or fitness or a “lack of mortgage”. It can be anything you want it to be. I’m very sure that there is something that you’ve wanted that you just haven’t thought it was possible so you haven’t seriously considered it.

I remember in 2006 I had just been fired from a job that I hated.

I was pretty determined to not have to go back to “just another job” where I would spend my days just waiting for the weekend as I grinded it out in meetings that had no meaning to me.

So I began learning everything I could about people who get well paid AND love their work. Let’s call these people “Happy High Achievers”

One of the things that I observed right away is that Happy High Achievers don’t often get jobs by traditional means. When you’re outside and looking in it almost seems random. It’s not though.

It also doesn’t have anything to do with applying 200 plus times on Indeed or LinkedIn.

So how do they do it?

Well we’ve talked in the past about the importance of prioritizing what you want. That’s step 1, you must understand where you’re going to make it easier to get there. That said Happy High Achievers realize that people hire other people (not companies and not computers) which means that the very biggest short cut to finding work that fits you (or even getting positions created for you) is through relationships.

Now over the years I personally have found the very fastest way to begin a relationship with someone else isn’t networking events (and it definitely isn’t speed networking!) It’s also not social media.

Instead it’s through something far easier: introductions.

What if you could have a system to rely on to make all your important decisions?

My friend Pete Mockaitis and I had a great conversation on the podcast today about how our decisions and needs evolve over time, and he shared a decision-making framework with two critical questions you can use as “mental weightlifting” to help make smart decisions faster.

I love his framework because it allows you to be less reactive and more intentional and proactive, which is very helpful in all areas of life (not just career stuff). I’d love to hear what you think, too!

Let me tell you about a great problem to have -- and a question that came from one of our students inside of Career Change Bootcamp, our signature program.

Laura said:

I'm really interested in a particular company, and I've now spoken to four people who work there. I've gotten really good at being genuinely interested in learning about roles and companies without actually "asking" anything...But now I want the job... so how do I graciously and not awkwardly shift the conversation from tell me about what you do, to... you should hire me because?

Curious to know the answer? Or, have a hypothesis of your own?

Find out the exact strategy I recommended for Laura in today’s episode of the podcast.

  • How to make potential  employers  feel like they are making the decision to hire you without any selling on your part.
  • How to go from researching and exploring a company that you think is a right fit to getting hired.
  • Learn how trust and relationship building are the foundations for landing your dream job.
  • Understand how humans don’t make objective choices based off of resumes but instead on knowing, liking, and trusting you.
  • How important it is to be a partner with the company and people you are seeking out because it makes the decision a shared responsibility and gives it weight.
  • Move from being a job seeker to the researcher, the interviewer, and a partner in the process.

  • Walk through the four questions you must ask yourself before giving yourself permission to make a substantial life change and leave the work that doesn’t fit you.
  • How to determine if you can make a clean getaway or if it’s time to find a bridge job to get you where you want to go.
  • Find out what can happen if you jump right into an opportunity just because it’s there without first doing the work to figure out what you want.
  • How taking a sabbatical, if you can endure it financially, can lead you to the right next steps.
  • How to get past the fear that you will just be jumping from the frying pan into the fire.
  • When is it okay to leave your job with nothing else lined up?
  • Learn how much time you should budget to allow you to find your next opportunity that is the right fit.
  • Learn about a bridge job and whether it’s a good step for you.

Today’s guest, Dan Cumberland, is a former youth pastor who suffered what he described as a “theological breakdown” early in his career. The power of suggestion took him down a career path that never quite fit him, but seemed right at the time.

(Can you relate?)

In his journey to get back on a path that matched his personality, Dan researched and developed his philosophy behind fulfilling career pathing and founded The Meaning Movement, a business and podcast where he helps folks with this kind of stuff every day.

In this episode of the podcast, we go really really deep into how...:

  • The voices from parents, friends, family, and others in your life shape who you are and what you do -- and what to do about it.
  • Language decisions and how you describe experiences can shape that experience and your future thoughts around it. (And why the power of suggestion can be so crippling in career pathing!)
  • Your love of finding the best pizza can guide you to a deeper underlying theme in your quest for meaning.
  • To define your dream job (using the four Ps framework) to discover work that’s more meaningful to you.

Aaaaaand...I’m back!

I hope you enjoyed last week’s message from Lisa and Josh to celebrate our 200th episode of the podcast.

(I still cannot believe it’s already been four years of podcasting. We covered a lot of ground in those episodes!!!)

And don’t worry: there are still plenty of topics that we could do 200 (or more) episodes on.

For example: do you recognize any of yourself in this story?

“If you are someone who is a rule follower, a successful person, we are brought up in these systems and taught if you do the right things, do well in school, pick the right major, follow all these steps then you will be happy. The world doesn’t work like that. It’s like this big insight that hits you. I felt like I had done everything right and ticked all the boxes. Went to skill, got my undergrad degree, top of my class, and got my masters, ready to conquer the world. I took a job with a salary that was less than I could live and commute on. I was commuting back and forth to New York City two hours, each day, to a job that was not a fit for me at all. It was a small environment in a room with three other people, not a lot of autonomy, but I intellectualized it away instead of listening to what I knew about myself - that I needed a high degree of being self-directed in my work.

“I was giving my life, time, power, and energy away. I sat there and was so burnt out - physically, mentally, emotionally. A hair-trigger event could set me off. One piece of bad feedback, a surprise email. I was so low anything could send me into that tailspin. That was my lightbulb moment of saying ‘this is not who I am,’ and that person deep down, that kid that was ambitious filled with hope and positivity and being so excited about the world ahead of me spoke up and said, ‘This is no longer acceptable. You have to start making changes.’ I had to look at all the ways I had let my identity, power and self-worth get wrapped up in someone else approving of me. My boss or sending someone my work, I had become so dependent on my work to make me feel good that I sacrificed everything else. My friendships, relationships, my body. I had to make changes.“ - Melody Wilding

If anything about this experience resonated with you -- and you’re ready to re-claim your own power in your work and life -- then I’m ridiculously excited to share this week’s podcast episode, #201 with Melody Wilding.

Melody is a licensed clinical social worker and career coach who is an expert on the mindset and psychology behind successful careers, and knows that taking a hard look at your life and deciding what you need to say “yes” to and what you need to say “no” to makes all the difference.

In this episode, you will learn...:

  • The signs to help you identify emotional versus physical burn-out -- and the steps to take to fix it
  • The three emotional triggers to know where your boundaries need to be repaired

  • How to have difficult conversations to establish (or re-establish) boundaries and gain control over your life

  • How deciding who to bring into your life makes you happier...and more profitable

...and so much more!

Today marks the 200th episode of the Happen to Your Career podcast.

Can you believe it? (We hardly can!)

Scott started the podcast 4 years ago, back when he was also working in a corporate job that he liked well enough...but wasn’t his dream.

He had a WAY bigger vision for what he wanted to create in his life, and how he wanted to help people.

So when you’ve heard him talk about how to transition and optimize your life from good to great on this podcast each week for the past four years(!), he’s not just spewing some BS he read that morning on a career site. He’s lived it.

And, so have the people whose lives he’s touched.

(Maybe you’re one of them?)

Josh and I rounded up some of the people who have been an important part of HTYC back from the very beginning (people like Scott’s wife Alyssa, their kiddos MacKenzie, Camden, and Grayson, and HTYC co-founder Mark Sieverkropp).

Then I grabbed some of the people whose lives have changed because of HTYC, including past coaching clients and team members like Erica, Mike, Tracey, Josh, Kirby, and Jacqui.

I asked them each three simple questions:

  1. Where was your life before you encountered Scott?
  2. What impact did Scott and HTYC have on your life?
  3. What's different about your future because of HTYC?

And their answers Blew. Us. All. Away. So Josh and I wanted to share them with you.

If you’ve been curious about what it’s like to get to know Scott personally -- or to get to work with him -- this episode is a must listen.

Do you want to have an answer to the “What do you do?” question that’s as powerful as that one?

If you do, you can start by asking yourself the question: “what am I on this earth to do right now?”

Give the question some time to percolate in your brain, and then grab paper and pen to start capturing the ideas and language that come to mind for you.

Or, if your brain feels slower than a semi truck with completely flat tires trying to deliver a shipment of molasses, you’re not alone -- and you probably should listen to today’s podcast episode.

Today’s guest, Maxie McCoy, uses this very question to shape how she introduces herself and explains her work. She’s a career inspiration expert who focuses on helping you tap into your own confidence and gifts to go kick some serious butt in the world.

Maxie has confidently navigated quite a few twists and turns along her professional path: going from college athletics to broadcast journalism, to growing one of the highest traffic women’s career and personal finance sites, to launching her own business as a writer, speaker and inspiration to create a life you’re jazzed about living.

We’re busting all the myths about confidence and giving you tactical tips on how to develop stronger self-belief today on the podcast with Maxie McCoy.

Listen to today’s episode to hear her guidance on…:

  • The strategic relationship building tactics she used to get a position at ESPN
  • Trusting your gut and make a career move that’s off the “planned” path
  • How to avoid living like you’re in a disaster or crisis (even when it might feel like it)
  • Cultivating the confidence to put yourself in positions to have serendipity start happening for you

Today’s episode is like a shot of confidence adrenaline right in your arm.

It’s powerful stuff, especially if you choose to follow the steps we outline in the blog post and downloadable worksheet.

One thing I’ve noticed after coaching for years is that the way you do one thing in your life is usually a sign of how you do everything.

Let me explain: if you put perfectionistic pressure on yourself to pick out your one right career path, you might also put that pressure on yourself to find your perfect, flawless (unicorn) romantic partner, to be the perfect friend, or improve your fitness by being perfect when you work out. (Maybe something super technical and detail-oriented like ballet or Olympic weightlifting...if you can get over your fears of not being perfect so that you can even start!)

Or if you’re afraid of losing out on options in your life, you might be too scared to commit to one career path or job, so you stay stuck in one you don’t like, because unhappiness feels safer than uncertainty of taking away future possibilities. You might be the one who goes out on dates with a ton of people but never wants to initiate the DTR (define-the-relationship) conversation and end up tied down. Or you might be the person who wants to eat at every new restaurant as soon as it opens, so you’ll know all the different culinary options that your city provides.

The way you do things isn’t necessarily a bad thing -- in fact, it can be a secret hint about your strengths hiding in your personality and habits.

You can see this secret strength concept beautifully illustrated in today’s podcast with Angela Wagner. The way Angela does work the the way Angela does life is an example of who she is. She started out her career in the high-powered advertising world, but was seeking to feel grounded outside of work, so she started working at a gym on the side.

Her decision to lean into opportunities that helped her stay active while relieving stress led her to creating community through becoming a yoga teacher...which led her to creating her own yoga studio...which led her to her getting training in yoga life coaching

Creating community for individuals ready to put down their baggage and seek soulful stress relief is Angela’s through-line. It’s how (and WHY) she does everything.

Have you ever heard of Soccer Tots?

In 2011 I hadn’t either.

It’s where you take little kids and they jump through hula hoops, run around cones, occasionally kick a soccer ball and sort of attempt to listen to their frazzled looking teacher. (Think; Pre Soccer)

I was supposed to leave midday on a flight for work and it didn’t make sense for me to go to the office so Alyssa suggested that I come watch Soccer tots.

I showed up at 10am in the middle of the day, not at all knowing what to expect.

One of my kids kicked a goal in the cones that were set up over 20 feet wide which made it nearly impossible for them to miss

He turned and saw that I was there in the room and started shrieking with excitement!

“Daddy did you see me get a goal” (He looked so happy!)

It was right then that I realized I HAD to figure out a way to be able to have the flexibility in my work to be able to be around.

NOT just for the big things in life (school musicals, family birthdays and weddings), but also the little things too!

I hadn’t realized what I was missing out on.

After that I became fascinated by the possibility of working remotely.

That was years ago and since then I’ve negotiated flexible and remote work for myself and helped many other people get jobs or change careers that allow them to work remotely!

We’ve had a lot of people come to us in the last few years that are also interested in doing the exact same thing.

For this reason we brought on Adda Birnir, the CEO of SkillCrush.com, to discuss remote work on the podcast. Not only does her company work entirely remotely but also they teach people (especially women) to code (which is one profession that is incredibly flexible)

If you want to learn how to make remote work possible for you check out this blog post and the podcast here!

On the podcast today, we talked about…

  • What it’s like to work in a remote workforce
  • The lack of diversity and representation in the tech industry
  • How couples negotiate the dynamic between career and relationship
  • The factors that set up a remote team for success...or disaster
  • Adda’s favorite secret vacation spot in Iceland

(We covered a lot of ground.)

Plus in this blog post we go through step by step the process we use to help clients get to remote and flexible work in their current jobs OR new careers!
