Happen To Your Career - Meaningful Work, Career Change, & Career Design (careers )

We all have strengths and weaknesses, and as we advance through our careers, we learn to cater to our strengths and compensate for our weaknesses. But sometimes, the aspects of our personalities that we think of as weaknesses may be our greatest strengths. Growing up, Ross Loufbourrow thought of ADHD as his greatest weakness. It was only once he graduated college and began his career that he discovered ADHD wasn’t a weakness – it was a super power. Ross shares his story on this week’s podcast.

In an age of email and LinkedIn, networking has never been easier. But networking has also become a dirty word. It means bothering people for favors or having them bother you, and knowing all the time that neither of you has any interest in actually getting to know the other person. Not surprisingly, this kind of transactional networking doesn’t really work. On the podcast this week, I chat with Darrah Brustein about her approach to networking by pursuing meaningful professional relationships.

One of the greatest assets that you can have in pursuing a career change is a support network of people who understand why career change is so important to you, and why you need their help to get through it. But creating this network may require some uncomfortable conversations. On the podcast this week, I chat with my former client Rebecca Maddox about how she built her support network, and the role that it played in her career change experience.

Career change means leaving an established routine for something unknown, which is scary and, let’s face it, risky. That’s why I love career experiments as a way to learn about different organizations and roles so you can try before you buy and make sure a new organization or a new role will truly be a fit before you commit to it. On this week’s episode, I chat with my HTYC colleague Lisa Lewis about the benefits of career experiments and how to design career experiments that work for you.

Over the course of our careers, as we grow, evolve, reach different stages in our lives, what once seemed like a dream job may stop feeling that way. And that’s great! Because it’s an opportunity to learn and explore who we are and what we want now, and then go get it. Kristy Wentz worked in PR for 20 years. And she loved it, until she didn’t. When she finally decided to move on, she created her own role that combined her favorite parts of PR… plus travelling and tasting wine. Not bad, right?

Fear of disappointing others can be a powerful barrier to pursuing your ideal role. Jenny hated her job, but was afraid to look for a new role for fear of letting other people down, taking a step back in her career and losing the benefit of her education. Three years later, she landed her ideal role.
